Terms of Engagement

A tremor rattled through Stella’s fingers as she lowered the phone, breath a shallow rasp against the cold silence filling the cramped apartment. The screen's glow died, swallowed by shadow, but Damon Vance's name still branded her like a searing coal pressed against her palm.

She blinked, willing the nausea to retreat, the world to settle. But the weight in her chest only grew heavier—bills stacked like tombstones over her dreams, the suffocating debt, the fading legacy of a family whose name now meant nothing but whispered ruin.

“Say yes,” the voice echoed in her mind. Not hers, not yet.

Her phone vibrated, a sharp reminder—a text from Damon. Two words:

“Your terms.”

Stella stared at the black screen, the cold deciding her fate.

---

The elevator’s hum was a low, unyielding growl beneath the polished steel and glass of Vance Tower. Each floor ticked by like a countdown toward an abyss she didn’t know if she could escape. Her heels clicked against the marble corridor, the sound hollow and foreign. The scent of leather and expensive polish assaulted her senses, wrapping around her like a velvet trap.

Outside Damon’s office, she hesitated. The polished door was a barrier, gleaming and cold, like the man who waited beyond it. She closed her eyes briefly, tasting the metallic bite of fear mingled with something colder—resolve.

She pushed open the door.

Damon Vance stood behind his sprawling mahogany desk, the cityscape sprawling endlessly behind him, flickering like a living beast entangled in steel and glass. His eyes caught hers with clinical precision, blue ice cutting through the heavy air.

“Sit,” he said, voice smooth, deceptive in its calm.

She sank into the leather chair opposite him, fighting the instinct to recoil. The room charged with silent tension, as though the walls themselves were listening.

“Your terms,” Damon’s gaze flicked to the thick folder resting on the desk, edged with her name in sleek script.

Stella swallowed hard, the air thick between them. “I want full control over the household finances,” she said, voice steady despite the storm thrashing inside. “No surprises. And a clear exit clause—no more than five years.”

Damon’s lips twitched, a ghost of a smirk—or was it a warning? “Five years,” he echoed, tapping a finger. “A generous window.”

“Generous?” Her voice sharpened, the ember of defiance flaring. “From what I’ve seen, you’re notoriously ruthless with contracts. And I’m not signing a life sentence.”

He leaned back, eyes narrowing. “Contracts are meant to be binding. Break them, and consequences follow. Your family’s debts don’t just disappear overnight.”

She met his gaze squarely. “I’m not the woman who lost her family fortune to bad decisions and worse luck. I want to rebuild—on my terms.”

“Rebuild with my money,” he interrupted smoothly. “It’s not charity, Stella. It’s a transaction. Your compliance... and a public narrative we control.”

Her heart stuttered, but she hid the sudden glint of hurt beneath layers of steel. “And if I walk away?”

Damon’s smile came sharp and cold. “You don’t walk away. Not without paying a price you can’t afford.”

She had expected aggression, threats; what unsettled her was the calm inevitability in his voice—as if he had already charted every move she might make, every weakness she harbored.

“Fine.” She pulled the folder toward her, retrieving the contract. Fingers trembling, but eyes fierce. “I want a clause against unilateral changes. If you try to pull a bait-and-switch, I’m gone. And you’re on the hook—publicly.”

Damon’s eyes flicked down to the pages, then back. “A public battle with me? You might find that harder than the debt.”

“Maybe,” she said, “but I won’t live in your shadow like a ghost. I’m not your property.”

For a flicker of a second, something raw passed through Damon’s face—a flicker she couldn’t name. Regret? Amusement? Or the faintest spark of respect?

He tapped a pen against the desk, then nodded. “Agreed on financial control. You’ll have access to an account with a monthly allowance for household expenses, but any large expenditures must be approved—by me.”

Her jaw clenched. “I’m managing the household. Wouldn’t trust you to pick the wallpaper.”

He leaned forward, eyes glittering. “Consider it an exercise in trust, Stella. Your loyalty will be rewarded.”

She swallowed the bitter taste of that word—loyalty—because loyalty wasn’t something handed out like pocket change in her world.

“Exit clause?” Damon prompted.

“Five years,” she replied quickly. “With a buyout option. And no penalties if I leave after that.”

He steepled his fingers, gaze sharp enough to slice glass. “Five years.”

He stood abruptly, breaking the gravity of the room, and moved to the window. The city’s sprawling lights flickered below them, each tiny point like a secret waiting to be uncovered.

“Don’t mistake this contract for a white flag,” Damon said without turning. “It’s a strategic truce. You help me dismantle the Damon empire’s shadows—and I protect you from its storms.”

Stella’s breath caught. “What exactly do you mean by that?”

His voice lowered, as if confiding a dangerous secret. “There are things beneath the surface, Stella. Family scars no one cares to see, and other people willing to tear us both apart to claim power.”

She hesitated, a cold shiver tracing her spine. “And you want me to be... your shield?”

“No,” he said, finally looking at her with an intensity that brooked no argument. “I want us to be partners. For now.”

The room seemed to shrink, pressing in with the weight of unspoken dangers.

She folded her hands over the contract, the paper trembling slightly beneath her touch. “I’ll sign.”

Damon extended a hand, fingers curling around hers in a grip both firm and unnerving.

“As long as we keep this deal... separate,” he said, voice low enough a secret might slip through. “No illusions. No more than business.”

Stella nodded, but somewhere deep, a premonition stirred—a warning whisper that this contract was a cage disguised as salvation.

The click of the door startled her when it swung open suddenly.

A man stepped in, sharp-eyed, a folder in hand. Damon’s expression shifted, shadows flickering across his face like a fault line cracking.

“Another complication,” Damon murmured.

Stella’s breath hitched.

What did he hide behind that cool exterior? And how long before the truth began ripping everything apart?
