Chapter 7
The air in the Morgan family’s sprawling penthouse felt thick—oppressive, almost suffocating—when Lila stepped through the polished glass doors. The low, amber glow of recessed lighting stretched long shadows across the marble floor, every polished surface reflecting shards of tension that sliced through the silence like shattered glass.
Her heartbeat hammered an erratic tattoo against her ribs, echoing louder in the cavernous space than it should have. She swallowed hard, fingers curling into tight fists at her sides. The weight of the conversation ahead crushed down like a stealthy avalanche, ripping away the fragile hope she’d clung to moments before.
She found them in the vast living room, the scent of aged bourbon and old money lingering in the air like an invisible fog. Her father, Malcolm Morgan, sat rigid in a high-backed leather chair, eyes narrowed behind his silver-framed spectacles, lips pressed thin. Beside him, her mother, Eleanor, traced an anxious line along the rim of her crystal glass, eyes darting as if seeking escape from a trap invisible to Lila.
“Lila,” Eleanor’s voice faltered the instant the door clicked shut behind her, the carefully measured calm in her tone cracking like brittle ice. “You’re home late.”
Lila kept her voice steady, brittle as winter branches snapping underfoot. “We need to talk. Now.”
Malcolm’s posture tightened, a faint tremor in his fingers betraying nerves his stoic facade refused to admit. “About what?”
She stepped forward, the heels of her stilettos clicking sharp and unforgiving. “About Adrian. About the disappearance.”
The words hung in the air, heavy and electric.
Eleanor’s breath caught, her gaze darting away to the impenetrable darkness beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, where the city’s neon heartbeat pulsed relentlessly. “You shouldn’t be asking those questions.”
“No,” Lila said, voice low, dangerous. “I should be demanding answers. You two have known something. Something you’ve been hiding.”
Malcolm’s jaw clenched visibly. “That’s nonsense.”
“Is it?” Lila’s laugh was sharp, brittle—bitter. “Because Adrian doesn’t just vanish without a trace. The police have hit dead ends. And I know you’ve been keeping secrets from me. Secrets that could save him, or destroy us all.”
Eleanor’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears, but she swallowed them down with a visible effort. “We protected you.”
“Protected me?” The word snapped like a whip in the silent room. “By lying? By letting Adrian disappear? By letting his empire burn, brick by brick, while I’m left drowning in the wreckage?”
The room seemed to pulse with the storm of unsaid truths and buried guilt.
Malcolm stood abruptly, the chair scraping harshly against the marble floor. His voice dropped to a whisper, the weight of years settling in every syllable. “It was necessary.”
“Necessary?” Lila repeated incredulously, stepping closer so they would feel the heat rising off her like wildfire. “You chose to sacrifice him? To run from the truth?”
Eleanor’s hand trembled as she reached out towards Lila, but the daughter stepped back, retreating into a safe circle of cold certainty. The unspoken barrier between them thicker than steel.
“We’ve carried this burden in silence,” Eleanor said finally, voice barely audible. “There are things the Morgan name cannot afford to know. Things that could ruin you.”
“We think we’re protecting you,” Malcolm added, eyes glassy with regret. “But maybe we’ve only made everything worse.”
Lila’s breath hitched. The realization dawned with brutal clarity—her family’s legacy was tangled in the web of Adrian’s vanishing like a predator’s trap closing around its prey. They hadn’t just been bystanders. They were enablers.
“But what exactly?” she demanded. “What are you hiding? What don’t you want me to know?”
A long silence followed, thick with grief and fear and the unbearable weight of concealed truths. Then Eleanor’s voice bled out in a choked confession.
“There was a document,” she whispered, fingers clutching the rim of her glass so tightly the crystal chipped. “A file that disappeared the day Adrian went missing. Something powerful. Dangerous.”
Malcolm’s eyes locked with Lila’s. “We both know who took it. And why.”
Lila’s knees trembled, the room spinning as the walls closed in with agonizing speed. The truth she hunted was no longer a distant shadow—it was a living, breathing monster crouched in her family’s darkest corners.
“And you kept this from me...” Her voice cracked under the weight of betrayal, heart shattering into raw, bleeding fragments.
“We thought it was best.” Eleanor’s trembling hand dropped, the glass slipping from her fingers, shattering into careless shards across the floor.
The sharp clatter echoed like a gunshot, punctuating the moment. Lila’s eyes flared with the inferno of rage and desperation. “No. It wasn’t best. It was selfish.”
Her father's face twisted—a mixture of sorrow, resignation, fear.
“We thought hiding it would save us all,” Malcolm confessed, the dam breaking in his voice. “But the night we lost Adrian… everything changed. And now, those ties that bind us might be the chains that destroy everything.”
Lila took a shuddering breath, the pieces falling into place like blood-stained puzzles. Her family’s silence wasn’t protection. It was imprisonment.
Her voice dropped to a whisper, a steely edge sharpening her resolve. “Then it’s time we stop hiding. Because I’m done being the one left in the dark.”
Before either parent could answer, the sharp trill of her phone sliced through the thick air. Hands trembling, Lila snatched it up—her heart leapt as the screen illuminated a message from an unknown number: “You don’t know the half of it. Meet me. Midnight. Pier 9.”
She looked up, eyes burning with newfound clarity.
“They’re watching,” she said, voice tight with determination. “And I need to know everything.”
Malcolm and Eleanor exchanged a glance, the flicker of fear unmistakable.
Eleanor’s voice broke, quivering yet resolute. “Then you’re ready to walk into the fire.”
Lila swallowed, the cold kiss of fate settling on her skin.
Because sometimes, the ties that bind aren’t about family—they’re about secrets that refuse to stay buried.
And tonight, those secrets were coming for her.
