Chapter 7

First Sign of Danger

Grace’s fingers hovered above the envelope, the glossy paper almost burning through her skin despite its cool surface. A faint metallic scent—like steel and rain—seeped from inside. She swallowed hard, her throat dry as ashes.

The hum of the penthouse suite felt sudden, oppressive. The city outside glittered with ruthless indifference, every light a beacon of ambition, greed, danger. Ethan sat across the room, his sharp features drawn tight, eyes narrowing into shadows she couldn’t decipher.

She tore the envelope open.

Inside, a single photograph spilled out. Crisp, stark—an image captured in the dead of night. Ethan, stepping out of the parking garage, caught mid-stride with his coat flapping. A figure loomed behind him, faceless in the dim halo of a streetlamp, raising a gun.

Grace’s breath hitched.

“You see that?” Ethan’s voice was low, brittle with suppressed rage.

“I do.” Her pulse hammered. “How recent is this?”

“Tonight. Minutes ago.” He stood abruptly, pacing the panoramic window as lightning fractured the skyline. “Someone tried to kill me.”

The words detonated in the room as if a bomb had dropped, shaking the fragile calm they’d been building.

Grace’s stomach clenched, a prelude to nausea. The icy realization spread like poison: their enemies weren’t abstract shadows anymore. They were closing in, breathing down their necks.

“Why would someone want to kill you? I mean, beyond the usual cutthroat business rivalry?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Because I’m in the way. Because I won’t bend. And because—” His gaze locked onto hers, hard and piercing, “—because of you.”

Grace’s breath stuttered. The room contracted, every pulse of her heart radiating that merciless truth. She was more than a bargaining chip now. She was the fulcrum on which their lives teetered.

A sudden sharp knock shattered the silence, harsh enough to slice through their spiraling thoughts. Both whipped toward the door, muscles coiling.

“Who is it?” Ethan’s voice was a razor edge.

No answer.

Only that unstable silence, twisted with the menacing echo of the city’s underbelly.

Grace stepped forward hesitantly and cracked the door a fraction.

Nothing but the long, empty corridor stretched out beneath a flickering light.

A folded note wedged between the door and the frame fluttered slightly in the draft.

Her fingers trembled as she grabbed it.

“No games,” was scrawled hastily in black ink. No signature. No explanation.

Ethan’s lip curled. “They’re toying with us—showing they can get close. They’ve infiltrated somewhere.” He stepped over and shut the door firmly. “Surveillance on the entire building is going up.”

Grace’s mind raced, every instinct screaming danger.

She glanced down at the photograph in her other hand and then back to the note. The faceless man in the picture wasn’t a random mugger. There was precision here—a surgical strike meant to send a message.

Minutes later, the penthouse was a nerve center. Cameras blinking red, security protocols shuffling into high gear. Grace remained rooted to the spot, eyes darting to the glass walls, the glowing skyline outside, wondering which shadow hid their assassin.

“Who else knows about this?” she asked, voice tight.

“Only my inner circle,” Ethan replied, fists clenched on the obsidian counter. “No one else can spin this.”

Suddenly, her phone buzzed sharply on the marble table.

A message from an unknown number: “Not everyone in your circle is loyal.”

Grace’s pulse tripled.

“Show me.” Ethan demanded.

Her thumb swiped, revealing an attachment—a video.

The screen flickered to life, grainy but unmistakable. Loose security footage from the parking garage. A figure stepping forward nonchalantly as the camera shifts focus. The face blurred, but a flash revealed a distinctive cufflink—a silver serpent coiled around a topaz.

“Lysander Crane,” Grace whispered, heart turning cold.

Ethan’s face darkened. “So it’s him.”

“He orchestrated this. The attack. The intimidation.” Her voice cracked with a mix of dread and fury. “He’s closer than we thought.”

A sudden pounding at the door jolted them again, fierce, urgent.

“Keep the cameras rolling,” Ethan barked. Grace moved to comply, hand shaking over the control panel.

But a shadow flickered behind the curtains.

Their eyes met in the dim light—unspoken warning, silent resolve.

The door rattled under the assault, and the world narrowed until only one truth remained—

They were running out of time.

Grace’s stomach plummeted as she froze, fingers hovering over the camera controls, heart screaming—

Someone on the inside was playing a dangerous game.

And they had just lost control.

The knocks escalated into muffled voices arguing outside.

Ethan’s voice groveled beneath his calm veneer, “Grace… get ready for anything.” His hand slid to the concealed gun at his hip.

She nodded, every nerve alight.

The door jolted violently again, splintering at the edges.

And through the crack, she caught a glimpse of a familiar smirk—the cold, predatory smile of Lysander Crane.

Grace’s breath hitched, eyes wide.

He knew exactly where to find them.

The war had come home.

And this time, none of them would live untouched.
