Chapter 6

The Past Collides

The knock came again—sharp, deliberate—echoing through the cavernous penthouse like a gunshot. Grace’s throat dried as cold dread pooled in her stomach. Her fingers trembled against the polished marble counter, and she pressed her back to it, as if the stone could shield her from whatever waited beyond the door.

Ethan stood still, unreadable. His eyes, dark with something unspoken, flicked toward the entrance, then back to her with a tilt of his head.

“Go,” he said, voice low, a command laced with warning.

Instead, Grace swallowed the panic swirling inside her. “Who is it?” Her voice came out brittle, cracked like thin ice ready to break.

“Does it matter?” Ethan stepped forward, shoulders squared like a readying predator. “We’re not alone anymore.”

The second knock came—this time softer. Almost hesitant.

Grace’s breath hitched, the sharp scent of expensive cologne drifting under the initial shock of cold air that spilled beneath the door. The world narrowed. The only sound was a slow, measured tapping against the wood.

“I’m warning you,” Ethan said, advancing until he was mere inches from Grace, the heat radiating off him prickling at her skin. “Answering that door changes everything.”

Grace nodded, blinking away the weight gathering behind her eyes. The door clicked, then creaked open just a crack.

A woman’s face slipped inside—a swirl of dark hair, sharp cheekbones shaded by shadows. Her eyes, a storm of cold calculation and something fragile beneath, locked on Grace.

“Grace Bennett.” Her voice was silk wrapped around steel. “We need to talk.”

Grace’s heart lurched. The name felt like a noose tightening.

Ethan’s jaw clenched, but he said nothing as the woman stepped in, folding herself into the space with practiced ease.

Grace’s breath caught on an invisible thread—this woman wasn’t just a surprise visitor. She was a key, turning in the lock of a door none of them expected to find.

“Who are you?” Grace demanded, voice steadier than she felt.

“I’m someone who knows everything,” the woman said, her gaze flickering to Ethan for a fraction of a second before settling back on Grace. “About your past. About why you’re really here.”

The room grew colder, the luxurious air suddenly suffocating.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Enough games.”

The woman smiled, faint but merciless. “It’s no game, Mr. Crane. It’s the truth you both have been running from.”

Grace stepped forward, fists clenched. “What do you mean? What truth?”

The woman pulled a sleek, black envelope from her bag, sliding it onto the glass table with a soft thud.

Grace’s fingers itched to rip it open, but Ethan shook his head sharply.

“Read it,” the woman urged. “You won’t believe what that letter says about your lives—about how connected your secrets really are.”

The weight of the unopened envelope was a promise—a threat—and Grace stared it down, heart pounding in her ears.

She thought of the lies layered beneath their fragile alliance, the masks they wore to hide their jagged edges.

And then, as her fingertips brushed the paper, a flicker of recognition sparked deep inside her—shards from a past she’d tried to bury, now clawing their way to the surface.

Because this wasn’t just about secrets.

It was about something far darker.

And Grace suddenly realized their fates weren’t tangled—no, they were entwined in a way that neither of them had ever anticipated.

A pulse of tension thrummed in the silence.

The envelope beckoned.

The stakes just became deadly real.
