Chapter 5

The Rival Emerges

The room fell into a taut silence, the kind that clawed under skin and huddled in the sharp angles of lingering glances.

Lila’s chest heaved, each breath a delicate tremor against the heavy stillness. The chandeliers blinked above like watchful eyes, their crystal pendants scattering flecks of icy light that made the cavernous hall shimmer like a frozen sea.

The grand double doors creaked open wider.

Vivian Cross stepped through, the sharp click of her stilettos punctuating the hush. She was a storm in silk—classic black gown hugging her slender frame, her hair a cascading wave of midnight that swallowed the light at its edges.

But it was her smirk—slow, deliberate, full of a venomous charm—that snapped the fragile calm into something electric and wicked.

Lila’s gaze locked onto her, the sudden reality settling like a cold weight in the pit of her stomach. Vivian’s presence was no accident.

The murmurs started, threading through the guests like a venomous tide, but Lila barely heard. Her fingers curled at her sides, knuckles paling.

Asher loomed beside her, a sculpted monument of control and power, but even his steely eyes flicked with flickers of unease. The tension between them shifted, crackling visible in the space they shared.

Vivian’s voice slid through the air, sharp and taunting.

“Well, well, Lila Monroe,” she said, every word dipped in poison. “Or should I say—the heiress who thinks she can play in the big leagues.”

A ripple of nervy laughter peeled from somewhere in the crowd, brittle as shattered glass.

Lila’s mouth throbbed, thirsting for words that didn’t come. The lines they had drawn—between loyalty and survival, love and war—started to blur.

Vivian sauntered forward, each step measured like a challenge.

“You and Asher,” she said, voice dipping into a teasing growl, “your little contract, your perfect little empire wedding. How cute.”

The cool scent of jasmine and something metallic whispered around them—Vivian’s signature. It burned like a warning.

Lila’s pulse quickened. She knew Vivian’s type: the avenger, cloaked in silk and scars. But no one spoke openly of her grudges—not until now.

“What do you want?” Lila managed, voice flat but edged with steel.

Vivian’s eyes glittered, twin shards of dark fire.

“I want what’s rightfully mine,” she said, stepping closer until the space between them pulsed with fury. “Your inheritance. Your name. Your throne. And I’ll burn anything—and anyone—in my way.”

A snarl, almost imperceptible, twisted her lips.

Asher’s hand found Lila’s, fingers curling around hers in a rare gesture of unity.

“Is that a threat or a promise?” he asked slowly, voice low enough only for the three of them.

Vivian’s smile sharpened—danger incarnate.

“Both,” she whispered, voice as sweet and lethal as broken glass.

Suddenly, the chandeliers flickered, throwing the room into a momentary shadow.

When the light returned, Vivian’s gaze bore into Lila’s, unblinking and merciless.

“So, tell me, Lila,” she breathed, steps retreating like a predator pacing a cage, “What will you sacrifice to keep Asher—and me—from tearing your world apart?”

The question hung—raw and poised to shatter the fragile veneer of alliances.

Lila’s heartbeat thundered, the air dense with threats and unspoken bargains.

She swallowed hard, realization flickering like fire through her veins.

Vivian didn’t just want disruption.

She wanted a war.

And it was only just beginning.
