Chapter 6
Elena’s fingers trembled as she smoothed the hem of her black silk gown, the fabric cool against her clammy skin. The echo of her father’s unfinished words curled through her mind—an ominous whisper beneath the clinking of glasses and laughter spilling from the gilded grand ballroom. Her breath hitched, caught in the tight cage of her ribs, as her eyes sought Adrian’s face across the mirrored walls.
He stood at her side, carved from shadows and light, every line of his lean, statuesque frame rigid with practiced composure. His jaw was clenched so tightly it threatened to fracture bone.
She wanted to reach out. To touch that taut barrier between them and remind him that beneath the charade, she was just a woman frayed by secrets and lies.
But this place called for steel, a flawless front, not fractures.
A waiter brushed past, the faint scent of jasmine and lemon weaving around them. Elena tasted bitterness on her tongue, the sour tang of dread mixed with cheap champagne’s fake sparkle. In the background, a string quartet murmured a melancholic tune, the bow scraping with a desperate, brittle edge—like the fragile alliance between her and Adrian, exposed to the world’s hungry gaze.
“Are you ready?” His voice was low, the familiar rasp a blade cutting through the overripe luxury of the room.
“I have to be.” She palmed her trembling hand into a still fist, willing the betrayal inside her to lie dormant.
The moment had arrived—their first public appearance as husband and wife. An orchestration of smiles, shared glances, and carefully choreographed distance. Everyone here, from society’s highest echelons to ravenous media vultures lurking behind crystal glasses, assumed the perfect picture. An alliance forged not in love, but in silence and obligation.
The doors to the ballroom opened wider, spilling in a new wave of glittering figures like a storm of stars fallen astray. Elena’s heart hammered hard enough to drown the violins.
Adrian extended his arm with the precision of a monarch presenting his queen, and she slipped her hand into the crook with a rehearsed grace. Their smiles, for now, were weapons—sharp and unyielding.
A cluster of reporters swarmed them with a calculated frenzy, words firing like arrows.
“Mr. and Mrs. Vale-Draxel, the talk of the city! How does it feel to finally unveil your union?”
Elena’s lips curved into a vague, tempered smile. “A new chapter.”
Adrian’s gaze was colder, distant, scanning the room’s ornate gilding as though seeking enemies in the filigree.
As the questions thinned, Elena’s attention was pulled to the lavish crowd—faces masked in polite curiosity, veins pulsing with ambition and secrets darker than the velvet drapes dangling around the chandelier. She scanned them all, searching for a crack in the glittering armor of this social coliseum.
Kieran Draxel.
Her breath caught like a sudden winter gust.
He emerged from the crowd like a ghost summoned by the whisper of danger. His tailored midnight suit swallowed the light, his gait deliberate. The room seemed to dim in his wake, the chatter fading into a chilling silence only she seemed to notice.
His eyes locked onto hers with a predator’s intensity. No smile. No greeting. Just pure, unfiltered hostility, sharpened by cold calculation.
And then his gaze slid, slow as a viper’s strike, to Adrian standing rigid beside her.
Every muscle in Elena’s body tensed.
Her pulse thudded a frantic warning—danger was no longer a shadow at the edges. It had arrived. It was inches away. Ready to unravel everything.
She swallowed hard, lips barely moving. “Kieran.”
His expression cracked with a snarl—something feral, taut—then melted into a mask of icy politeness as he stepped forward.
“Well, well,” Kieran said, voice smooth like polished obsidian. “What a surprise to find you two here. Together.”
Adrian’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Kieran.”
The air turned viscous, thick with silent threats and unspoken histories.
Elena’s fingers tightened around Adrian’s arm, nails digging into steel beneath his tailored jacket. The masquerade was ending, or perhaps only just beginning.
Behind the bloom of flashbulbs and hushed gasps, the first true battle line had been drawn.
And all Elena could do was hold her breath—for whatever came next.
The murmur of the crowd rippled like a warning.
Kieran’s next words, deadly and deliberate, sliced through the opulent air:
“I’ve been waiting for this moment. For all of us to finally confront what makes your alliance so... fragile.”
A predator’s promise.
A war begun in shadow and silence.
And her carefully constructed life teetered on the edge of ruin.
The doors to the grand ballroom closed with a muted thud behind Kieran.
The night had just turned.
And nothing would ever be the same.
