Chapter 10

Betrayed by Blood

The knock reverberated through the tight confines of Elena’s apartment like a gunshot in a hollow cave. Her fingers, trembling with a cocktail of dread and urgency, hovered tense over the door handle. The skin at her knuckles whitened.

No second rap followed.

Just silence.

Her heart hammered a relentless cadence against her ribs, each beat a whispered warning.

The stale air pressed against her sweaty skin. Somewhere beyond the thin wooden door, shadows lurked—unseen, unyielding. She wanted to run, to hurl herself into the night clutching the fragile strands of her crumbling hope. But she was frozen in place, the echo of that rap a dagger sinking deep.

Finally, she swallowed hard, fingers curling around the cold steel. With a breath that threatened to shatter, Elena twisted the knob.

“Liam?” she breathed—the name rolling off her tongue like a plea.

Standing there was her oldest friend from architecture school. Liam's eyes, usually bright with a reckless spark, were locked onto the floor, his jaw tight, shoulders hunched as if weighed down by invisible chains.

“Hey,” he said, voice strained, like a man fighting to hold the pieces of himself together.

“Is everything—?” Elena started.

He shook his head. “We need to talk. Now.”

Behind him, the harsh glow of the hallway fluorescent light spilled in, revealing every detail—the tremble in his hands, the stain of sweat darkening his collar. It wasn’t like Liam to sneak in unannounced, not like this.

Her gut twisted. “Come in.”

The door shut with a soft click that sounded lethal against the pounding silence.

Inside, the tension between them was a thick, electric wire. Elena closed the door, leaning against it as if for support.

“What’s going on?” she asked. “You wouldn’t just—”

He cut her off, words spilling out like a dam breaking.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

Her eyes narrowed. “What are you talking about?”

Liam swallowed, gaze skittering away. “They threatened my sister.”

Elena’s pulse pinned behind her temples. “Who?”

“The Draxel people.”

Her breath hitched. The Draxel name was a poison in her mouth—synonymous with power, with control. And with the man she was married to, though their alliance was more fragile than steel.

“Liam, you have to tell me everything,” she whispered, stepping forward.

He nodded, then glanced nervously toward her laptop resting on the coffee table.

“I... I sent an email last night,” he admitted, voice cracking. “To Merton & Co.”

The words landed like a brick.

“Elena,” he confessed, voice breaking. “I leaked the project plans, the blueprints. They’re using your designs to pitch against Vale & Sons in the Eastwood development bid.”

Cold air swirled around her lungs, but she didn’t speak.

“Please,” he pleaded. “It’s the only way to keep my sister safe.”

The betrayal stung sharper than any wound. Her professional world—a world she had fought tooth and nail for—was crumbling from a knife driven by the one person she’d thought was untouchable.

Elena’s fingers curled into fists at her sides. The room felt too small, too heavy.

Then, a ping from her laptop dragged her attention back. She opened it with shaking hands, her heart shattering as she found the email sent to Merton & Co sprawling on the screen—her firm’s most guarded secrets laid bare in cold, calculated prose.

Her eyes scanned the sender address.

“Liam,” she said hoarsely.

He met her stare, pain flickering behind his apology-ridden gaze.

“I never wanted to hurt you. You have no idea what I’m up against.”

Her voice snapped.

“Or maybe I do.”

A bitter, icy rage unfurled in her chest.

“So this is your way? To betray me when my back is already to the wall? To sell me out because your family’s involved?”

Liam’s shoulders slumped, defeated.

“You don’t understand the stakes.”

Elena’s breath hitched. “No. Maybe I’m starting to.”

The betrayal, the lies, the fragile threads holding her family’s legacy—it all twisted tighter, strangling her.

And yet, beneath the rage, a colder truth settled.

She knew exactly who stood behind this move.

Someone close.

Not just Liam.

The email signature included a name.

One she had overlooked until now.

Someone within her own circle.

Someone whose betrayal would cut her deeper than any rival.

Elena stared at the name, her breath catching like a wire tightening across her throat.

Frozen, she whispered: “No. It can’t be.”

And then, the soft, deliberate ring of her phone shattered the room’s brittle silence.

Caller ID: Unknown.

Her fingers hovered, every muscle coiled. Her heart dared a fearful beat.

And just like that—the world tipped over into chaos.
