Secrets in the Dark

Harper’s voice caught mid-air, a stifled gasp that barely escaped her lips. The room’s icy stillness pressed against her skin, the glinting chandeliers mocking the torment in her chest. Behind her, Adrian’s silhouette was a storm waiting to break, but Lysander’s words—poison wrapped in silk—seared into her mind.

She snapped her head toward Lysander, eyes sharp knives. “What exactly do you mean?” Her voice trembled on the razor’s edge between rage and fear.

Lysander’s mouth quirked—a slow, cruel smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Don’t play naive, Harper. You’re clever enough to pick up on the secondhand whispers in your precious high society. But I guess you haven’t heard the whole story.”

She swallowed hard. The thick scent of expensive cologne mixed with the faint musk of his leather chair, anchoring her in this suffocating moment. Her fingers curled into fists at her sides, nails biting into her palms.

“You think destroying me will bring you closure?” She stepped closer, daring the distance that power enforced between them. “But you’re wrong. You may ruin my reputation, but my family’s scandal—whatever you think you know—isn’t the truth you’re waiting for.”

Lysander’s eyes narrowed, the weight behind them pulling at the shadows in the room. “Oh? Then enlighten me, Harper. What is the truth? Because from where I’m standing, it looks like your family’s skeletons have been dancing in the closet all along. And you’ve been covering for them.” His voice dripped with accusation, venom that seeped into every syllable.

“Covering for them isn’t weakness,” she retorted fiercely. “It’s protection. Something you clearly don’t understand.” Her whole body bristled with defiance, but beneath it was a tremor of uncertainty. How much did he know? How deep did this poison run?

Lysander leaned forward, the polished table gleaming under the harsh light between them. He reached into his jacket, pulling out a slim tablet and sliding it across with deliberate slowness. “Take a look. This’ll save me the trouble of repeating myself.”

Harper’s breath hitched as her gaze traveled to the screen. A grainy photo loaded—a snapshot of a young girl, no more than ten, standing beside a man whose face was half-hidden in shadows. But it was the caption below that shattered her: “Harper Evans, implicated in the Crowe family financial scandal, 2006.”

A cold wave crashed over her, gulping up her breath. That girl—herself, years ago—was caught in a web she’d tried desperately to escape.

“How did you even get this?” her voice cracked, trembling with barely controlled panic.

Lysander’s smile deepened, sharp and bone-white. “I told you—nothing is as hidden as you think. The Crowes hate Adrian now, but in those days, we were all tangled up. Your family’s disgrace was never just a business failure. It was a deliberate hit.”

Harper’s heart hammered harder, the room spinning as layers of forgotten pain peeled open. Lysander was using her past like a blade against her—threatening everything she’d held sacred. Her mind raced, haunted by whispers she’d buried deep.

“Why are you telling me this?” she demanded, voice shaking yet resolute. “What do you want from me?”

Lysander’s dark eyes gleamed, calculating. He leaned back, fingertips lightly tapping the table. “I want you to understand why this marriage is no charity, Harper. I want you crippled before you even think about rooting yourself in my world. Because if you fall, Adrian’s carefully built empire will crumble with you.”

She swallowed the bile of that truth. Every breath she took felt like a battle against the suffocating truth that threatened to strangle her dreams.

“Your move,” Lysander said softly, the final note deadly serious.

Harper’s mind worked furiously, the weight of his revelation crushing, but a spark kindled inside. Secrets may poison, but knowledge was power. If Lysander thought he could use her past to break her, he’d just lit a fuse he couldn’t control.

The room seemed colder now, the golden shimmer of wealth thin and brittle as glass. Outside, the city had no idea what war was waging in the shadows of this glittering penthouse.

She swallowed the lump in her throat. “There’s more you don’t know,” she whispered.

Lysander raised an eyebrow. “Do tell.”

Suddenly, her phone buzzed sharply against the marble tabletop, the screen flashing an unknown number. Harper glanced down, heart stuttering.

Lysander’s gaze flicked to the phone. “Seems your secrets aren’t the only ones lurking.” His smile tightened. “Who’s calling, Harper?”

Her fingers trembled as she answered, the voice on the other end low, urgent.

“We need to talk. Now.”

Her breath caught—because that voice didn’t belong to anyone she expected.

And just like that, the fragile veil of safety shattered once again.
