Chapter 4

Shadows of the Past

Harper’s pulse hammered against her ribs, deafening in the stillness of the room. The sting of betrayal bit sharper than she’d imagined, twisting cold inside her chest as her eyes darted to the door—now shut, locking her out from answers that should have been hers.

The air smelled metallic, like rain hitting black pavement, though no storm threatened outside. Her fingers trembled, clutching the smooth edge of a glass tabletop, knuckles white. The trace of Lysander’s shadow lingered—in the faint scent of his cologne, masculine and dry, lingering like smoke in the room’s corners. Impossible to ignore.

The screen on her phone blinked silently, a text that glowed like a flickering candle in the dark.

“Trust no one. Not even him.”

No sender. No signature. Just words. As if someone carved them directly into the marrow of her doubt.

Her eyes narrowed. “What the hell does that mean?”

Her breath curled in ragged lungfuls. Harper’s mind scrambled over every image from last night: Adrian’s sharp smile, the graceful way she’d seen him disarm a boardroom of vultures; Lysander’s cold sneer, darkening the edges of every glance. The pieces didn’t fit. Or maybe they fit too well, like puzzle pieces forced into shapes they never belonged to.

Outside the towering windows, the city flickered—a sprawling constellation of light and shadow mirrored in her spiraling thoughts.

A sudden knock jolted Harper. Hard, deliberate.

Her heart jumped as the doorknob rumbled, and the door eased open to reveal Mia—her closest friend and the only one who’d ever seen beneath the armor.

Harper’s voice caught. “Mia, I—”

Mia’s eyes burned fierce, unblinking. “You need to hear this before you speak.”

She stepped inside, folding her arms like a general flooding battle plans.

“I found something last night,” Mia said, voice low, sharp.

The room seemed to shrink around Harper as she braced for the blow.

Mia slid a slim envelope across the table. “This was slipped under Adrian’s door after the gala. No name. No signature.”

Harper’s fingers jerked. She peeled open the paper carefully.

Inside, a photograph spilled out: Adrian and Lysander, shoulder to shoulder, their faces frozen mid-laughter. But the image wasn’t candid—it was staged. A public photo, from a charity event years ago. It looked innocent enough, but something twisted inside Harper.

Behind them, almost hidden in the blur, was a figure she recognized instantly: her uncle, Marcus.

Marcus.

The man who had sunk her family into disgrace. The man no one dared to mention in polite conversation.

Her breath hitched, lips pressed tight.

“You’re saying Marcus is connected—to Adrian and Lysander?” Harper’s voice trembled, barely a whisper.

Mia’s nod was slow, solemn. “I think Marcus was never acting alone. Someone bigger, with deeper claws, has been pulling strings for years.”

Harper’s mind spiraled into the shadows of stories she’d buried — whispered arguments behind closed doors, the sudden collapse of her father’s company, the cold nights where promises dissolved into silence.

Digging into those wounds risked reopening cracks she wasn’t sure she or her family could survive.

But if Marcus wielded power alongside Lysander and Adrian—if the scandal was a pawn in a far more dangerous game—then Harper’s role was no longer just about salvaging her own dignity. It was about survival.

Mia’s phone buzzed then.

She glanced down, face pale.

“It’s from an unknown contact,” Mia said, voice hollow.

Harper leaned in as Mia read aloud:

“The fall is closer than you think. Watch the wolf disguised as a lamb.”

Harper’s blood ran cold. The wolf. The lamb.

Adrian was the lamb, the man who wore the haloed mask of trust and charm in every polished speech and private smile.

But who was the wolf?

Her eyes flickered back to Mia, searching.

“I need to see Adrian—now.”

Outside, the city’s din deepened—engines bleeding into sirens, the hum of a world spinning indifferent to the fractures waiting to shatter.

As Harper grabbed her coat, she felt the crushing weight of the unspoken truth: in a city drowned in lies, the closest danger was often the one wrapped in familiar skin.

Behind, the door shut with a final thud.

And the game twisted tighter.

The knock came again—at her own apartment door.

Harper’s breath stuttered. Not Mia’s this time.

She crept forward, heart hammering, fingers curling into a makeshift weapon—a heavy book balanced between her palms.

Slowly, she peeled back the peephole and froze.

Outside stood a courier, a small envelope clutched tight, hand extended.

Harper hesitated—an instinct warning her against it.

But the letter slipped inside before she could stop it.

The door clicked shut.

Her pulse rattled in her ears as she tore it open.

The message inside was brief, cold in its precision:

“Adrian’s betrayal runs deeper than you know. Trust your instincts. Destroy the alliance before it’s too late.”

Harper dropped the letter, hands shaking.

Somewhere beyond the glossy veneer of wealth and power, a secret war waged—and she was caught in the crossfire.

Her next move wouldn’t just decide her fate.

It would decide everything.
