Chapter 2

Terms of the Deal

Harper’s chest tightened, the air between them thick enough to drown in. His words weren’t just ultimatums—they were chains waiting to be fastened.

She stared down at the sleek leather binder he slid across the glass table. The city’s neon splattered through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him, casting fractured shards of light over the embossed gold lettering: Crowe Enterprises. Contract of Marriage.

Her fingers hovered, hovering over the cold surface. Each breath came shallow, fragile. The distant hum of the bustling city seeped in—sirens, honking horns—but inside the penthouse suite, time had evaporated, suspended in an impossibly sharp stillness.

“You don’t even want to be here,” Harper said, voice trembling on the edge of defiance and despair. “Why force this? Why me?”

Lysander's eyes, cold glaciers unapologetic and godlike, didn’t blink. “Because you’re everything Adrian threatens. And you will protect me from him, whether you like it or not.”

Harper’s stomach rebelled, twisting with the bitter truth laced through his words. Adrian. Her ex-fiancé. The man responsible for her family’s ruin—the man Lysander sought to destroy by burning his whole world, starting with her.

She wasn’t naïve. She knew the price of this pact. This was no fairy tale. The contract was a cage disguised as salvation.

Still, the temptation to pull that sleek, black pen toward her, to sign away her life in the hopes of shielding those she loved, gnawed relentlessly.

But doubt slammed into her like icy rain.

“What else is in here?” Harper whispered, voice cracking as she flipped open the binder.

The first page was clinical—names, dates, the legal outline of their marriage. Binding, irreversible. Then more: clauses stacking like landmines, each word heavier. Custody stipulations, financial controls, a labyrinth of confidentiality agreements designed to shroud Lysander’s empire—and her new existence—under an impenetrable veil.

Harper’s eyes flicked to a section titled “Personal Conduct.” Her heart stuttered as she scanned the sentences.

“You’ll live under my roof,” one clause read. “No unsanctioned meetings. No undisclosed communications with third parties. Full transparency in finances and whereabouts.”

Her fingers trembled, tracing the letters that tightened their grip around every corner of her life.

Another clause burrowed deeper: “Termination of agreement subject to mutual consent only, void if consent denied or withheld.”

So, no escape.

She shivered. The walls of this contract didn't just bind their marital status—they shackled her freedom, her independence, her very identity.

Lysander’s wristwatch glinted under the chandelier’s cold light. “You wanted protection,” he said, voice as sharp as the blade hidden in a pocket. “This is what protection costs.”

Harper turned, meeting the razor edge in his gaze head-on. “This is a leash.”

His lips twitched into a semblance of a smile that lacked warmth. “If it keeps your family safe, isn’t it worth it?”

Her mind whirled. Every instinct screamed danger, but beneath the suffocating weight of the contract, a flicker of fragile hope ignited.

“Let me have a day,” she finally said, voice steadying against the storm within. “To think.”

Lysander’s expression darkened. “One day. No more.”

She nodded, sliding the binder back toward him, the pen now a merciless symbol of a future rewritten.

As the elevator doors chimed open, echoing through the marble foyer, Harper’s phone buzzed sharply on the side table.

Her thumb flicked it open.

A message flashed—no sender, no name.

“This contract is only the beginning. You’re already deeper than you realize.”

Her breath caught.

The past wasn’t done with her.

Not by a long shot.
