Chapter 1
The gallery buzzed with low murmurs and the clinking of glasses, but Harper felt none of it. Her pulse hammered like the frantic brushstrokes she’d thrown onto the canvas earlier that week—the one now front and center under the harsh spotlight.
“Look at that,” someone whispered nearby, voice sharp like a knife sliding through silk.
Harper’s fingers curled slightly around her wine glass. The painting—a chaotic swirl of dark reds and haunting shadows—it was supposed to be her breakthrough. Raw, honest. Not this.
But the crowd wasn’t admiring the brushwork.
Across the room, a large screen flickered on, the muted tones of a breaking news segment bleeding into the gallery’s soft lighting. Harper’s name flashed beneath a headline: "Artist Linked to Senator Declan Voss’s Money Laundering Scandal".
Her stomach shuttered, cold sweat prickling at her hairline.
A reporter’s gravely voice announced, “Documents obtained show Harper Evans as a financial contributor in suspicious transactions tied to Senator Voss—raising questions about her involvement in one of the country’s biggest corruption cases.”
Harper’s brow furrowed as she scanned the room. Faces blurred into a sea of shock, disdain, and speculation. Some whispered behind fluttering fans; others stared, mouths tightening like steel traps.
“Is this some kind of joke?” A familiar voice cut through the tension.
Harper turned sharply. Adrian stood near the entrance, his jaw tight, eyes stormy beneath dark lashes.
She barely had time to respond before an aide by Adrian’s side leaned in, murmuring something urgent.
Adrian’s gaze flicked back to her, cold and unreadable. With a heavy inhale, he stepped forward, voice low, but carrying the weight of command. “Harper, we need to talk. Now.”
Her heart knocked against her ribs as she nodded, abandoning the thinning crowd.
Outside, the city’s neon pulse spilled over her like acid rain. The air tasted metallic, thick with impending disaster.
They entered a sleek black car waiting at the curb. The silence between them was taut, laced with questions neither dared voice.
Finally, Adrian broke it. “This is more than a scandal, Harper. It’s a message.”
She swallowed hard. “I’ve done nothing wrong.”
“But your name is right there,” he said, eyes never leaving the glassy cityscape. “Front page. Connected to Voss. You’re no longer just an artist—now, you’re a threat.”
Her fingers clenched the seat fabric, nails digging in. “Who’s behind this?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Someone who wants to cripple me—and anyone close to me.”
Harper’s breath hitched. The implication: this wasn’t random. It was personal.
The car slid to a halt near a private rooftop garden atop Adrian’s tower. The wind whipped cold, slicing through her thin jacket.
Adrian led her to the edge, city lights sprawling beneath like a stolen treasure.
He turned to face her, expression unreadable. “I’ll protect you, Harper. But it’s going to cost you.”
She blinked. “What do you mean?”
The city seemed to hold its breath when Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a thin leather-bound folder. He tossed it onto the marble slab between them.
Harper’s pulse jumped as she flipped it open. Inside, a contract—precise, merciless.
“Married by mistake?” she whispered, eyes scanning the words that would bind her to Adrian Crowe, billionaire and enigma, in a marriage neither wanted but both desperately needed.
Her gaze locked with his. Somewhere between challenge and cold command, his voice dropped:
“Sign this, Harper. Become mine. Or watch everything you love burn.”
