The Contract Heats Up

Knox’s hand froze just above the doorbell. The silence between them stretched—thick and suffocating—before his steely gaze flicked back to Isla.

Her throat tightened, heart pounding like a frenzied drum. She felt the cold bite of the night air seep inside, or maybe that was just the chill cascading from her own skin, threading down her spine.

“Stay here,” Knox said low, voice rough, measured. Not a question.

Isla nodded, fingers trembling as she gripped the edge of the marble console. The note—the ugly promise inked with venom—fluttered in the breeze like a warning.

The door swung open, a silhouette framed against the sprawling city behind him.

“It’s me,” came a voice—smooth, dark, dangerous. Viktor.

Isla’s breath hitched. The room suddenly felt smaller, the walls closing in with secrets she wasn’t ready to face.

Knox’s jaw clenched hard enough to cast a shadow. “What are you doing here?”

Viktor’s smile was a slash of ice. “Checking in on my favorite bride.”

The words sliced through the fragile calm like a knife, and Isla felt every muscle in Knox’s body coil, ready to strike—or snap.

Viktor’s eyes darted to Isla, glinting with cruel amusement, then back to Knox. The tension crackled, electric, suffocating them both.

“You’re playing a dangerous game,” Knox warned, stepping forward, his voice low and cold.

Viktor shrugged, unfazed. “That’s the only kind I know.”

Before anyone could move, Isla’s phone buzzed in her pocket—the sharp vibration a jarring contrast to the heavy silence. She pulled it out, her fingers numb.

A message flashed:

“Isla—meet me. Urgent. Outside. Alone.”

No name.

Her vision blurred at the edges. Every instinct screamed to run, to hide—but also a raw, desperate need to understand what tangled web she’d stepped into.

Knox’s eyes found hers, hard and unreadable. No softening. No reassurance.

“Don’t even think about it,” he said.

Her breath caught. “I have to.”

“No.” His voice cracked. “You don’t.”

The clock on the wall ticked loudly—each second a countdown. The static hum of the city seeped in through the windows, a reminder that their lives had twisted far beyond ordinary.

Viktor’s chuckle grated like broken glass. “Decisions, decisions.”

Isla swallowed down the whirlwind of panic, deciding in that split second—

She slipped the phone away, backed toward the study door.

“Wait—” Knox’s hands reached out but didn’t grasp. The distance between them suddenly much wider.

Outside, the city twinkled, oblivious to the storm brewing behind these walls.

Locked in a silent war of wills, Isla knew one truth: nothing here was what it seemed.

And the contract… was far from over.

---

Morning came harsh and unforgiving, sunlight stabbing through the blinds in jagged slashes.

Isla lay curled on the sofa, her fingers tapping an erratic rhythm on the fabric. Knox sat across from her, heels of his palms pressing into his temples, bone-white knuckles flashing.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Knox exhaled, sharp and deliberate. “You chose to ignore me yesterday.”

Her gaze flicked up, tired but defiant. “You don’t control me.”

“We agreed on boundaries,” his voice low, the thinly veiled threat sharpening every word.

She bit back the urge to retort. With Knox, every argument was a sparring match, and she was still learning the rules.

“I’m not your possession,” Isla said, teeth clenched.

He stared at her, the faintest hint of something—frustration? Admiration?—flickering behind his eyes.

That silence between them wasn’t emptiness. It was a minefield.

After a long pause, Knox’s tone shifted. “Why did you really want to meet last night?”

Her fingers twined, face flushed beneath her defenses. “Because if we’re going to do this… if we’re going to be married, there needs to be trust.”

Knox’s laugh was humorless. “Trust? From a contract?”

Isla’s voice dropped. “From me. From us.”

The room felt suddenly smaller, charged—not with tension, but something harder to name.

Knox leaned forward, elbows on knees, eyes locked on hers with an intensity that made her skin prickle.

“Do I trust you, Isla?” His voice barely more than a whisper. “No. But I need you. More than I’m willing to admit.”

Her breath caught, chest rising unevenly.

A charged silence filled the space between them, raw and fraying at the edges.

He reached out, a slow, cautious movement, fingers brushing hers.

Isla’s pulse hammered, every nerve alight as their hands tangled—fingers entwined, hesitant, searching.

Neither spoke the truth curling around them both.

Neither dared.

The clock ticked relentlessly onward.

Outside, the city’s heartbeat thrummed—a wild symphony of light and shadow.

And in this precarious, fragile moment, two strangers bound by contract simmered on the edge of something dangerous, something real.

Neither wanted to admit how much it terrified them.

But neither could pull away.
