Chapter 6
The note slipped through the crack beneath the heavy door, dark ink bleeding into the pale paper like a bleeding wound. Isla’s fingertips trembled as they closed signet rings over the message—Viktor Crane’s caligraphy, jagged and regal all at once.
Her breath hitched, tight and shallow like she’d swallowed shards of glass. Across the room, Knox’s posture stiffened, jaw clenched so tight years could have been ground to dust between his teeth. His gaze, usually an impenetrable fortress, now slivered dangerously thin, like a blade pressed perilously close to skin.
“We have a problem,” Knox’s voice sliced the room, low and cold as winter’s first bite. “Viktor Crane.”
Isla swallowed hard. The name hit sharper than she expected—as if pulled from the depths of some nightmare she hadn’t yet dared name.
He circled the polished mahogany desk like a predator, fingers drumming a slow, ruthless tattoo. “You don’t know the half of it. But if he’s sent you something,”—his eyes flicked to the note clenched in her hand—“then it’s more than a warning. It’s a declaration.”
Isla’s skin prickled. Her mind spun, fracturing shards of every whispered rumor she'd overheard in this gilded cage. Viktor Crane wasn’t just another titan of industry—no, he was a storm descending, dark clouds wrapped in silk, poised to rip apart everything Knox had built. And now, everything she depended on.
“Why me?” she blurted, voice barely above a breath. “Why am I caught in this?”
Knox’s gaze locked onto hers, hard and unyielding. “Because, Isla, you’re not just collateral. You’re leverage. And right now, that means everything.”
Her pulse thundered in her ears as she sunk onto the leather sofa, the city skyline bleeding its neon fury against the night. Somewhere out there, Viktor Crane was watching. Calculating. Waiting to move.
The air in the room thickened, heavy with looming danger. “Tell me everything,” Isla whispered.
Knox’s jaw relaxed fractionally. A flicker of vulnerability passed through his mask of control. “Viktor started out in our world like anyone else: ambitious, cunning... underestimated. But he doesn’t play by the rules—he rewrites them in blood and ruin. Years ago, he got burned badly by Knox Enterprises. Lost millions. Family nearly destroyed. Since then, it’s been personal.”
Isla’s fingers clenched the note tighter. The signature at the bottom—the jagged loop of 'V'—felt like a brand burned on her skin.
“He’s ruthless. Not just in business, but in war.” Knox’s voice dropped to a whisper so fierce it trembled the air between them. “If Viktor wants you or me, it’s because we're key to breaking the other.”
Her heart hammered, each beat a promise and a threat tangled together. “What does he want from me? From us?”
Knox shook his head, pacing now, every movement precise and calculated. “Power. Control. Revenge. And he’s patient—I’ve seen entire empires fall one pawn at a time.”
Isla’s breath caught. That was her, a pawn, disposable, fragile—a sacrificial piece in a game whose rules she didn't understand.
The sharp chime of her phone shattered the suffocating tension. She scrambled for it, eyes wide, breath hitching again.
A single message glared from the screen, every letter burning cold:
“You think marriage binds you? It chains you. Careful, Isla. Freedom is a lie.”
Signed—V.
Her skin went numb. The city lights flickered outside the window like distant warnings.
And in that suffocating silence, she realized: the price of her new life was about to come due.
A knock shattered the hush, sudden and urgent—sharp against the glass like a bullet.
Isla jumped, fingers curling into fists as Knox’s eyes narrowed.
“Who could that be now?” she whispered, dread pooling in her stomach.
When Knox moved to answer, Isla’s gaze fell back on the note—the promise, the threat—scrawled in midnight ink.
The beginning of the end, indeed.
