A Foundation of Lies

The room seemed to exhale with the weight of unspoken truths. Isla’s fingers trembled, barely steady against the polished surface of Viktor’s desk. He’d invited her in, not out of kindness but something sharper—an unyielding calculation that sent ice crawling up her spine. The faint hum of the city below was a distant ghost behind thick glass and thicker walls.

“You want to know about Knox,” Viktor said, voice low like a blade sliding out of its sheath. His gaze didn’t waver, but his jaw clenched. “Be careful what you dig for, Isla. Because Knox isn’t just some corporate titan. He’s built his empire on foundations soaked in more than just money.”

Isla swallowed hard. The shadows under his eyes were darker than she’d ever noticed. “I’m not afraid of dirt,” she said, but the lie tasted bitter in her mouth.

Viktor pushed a leather-bound folder toward her, the edges soft with age. The logo embossed on the front was subtle—a capital K intertwined with a serpent’s coil. Her breath hitched. Knox’s emblem. Somehow, this was the first time she’d seen it beyond corporate hallways and glossy magazines.

She flipped it open, eyes scanning the pages fast enough to catch names, dates, figures—but slow enough to absorb the weight beneath the numbers.

“Why show me this?” Her voice barely a whisper.

“Because you’re closer to this than you realize.” Viktor leaned forward, fingers steepled. “Knox didn’t rise alone. His strength is tangled with others, sometimes in ways he’s carefully erased from the public eye.”

Isla’s stomach twisted. Memories flickered—her father’s quiet desperation, the bankruptcy notice pinned on the door like a dagger, the whispered gossip that turned neighbors cold.

“Are you saying Knox had something to do with my family’s ruin?” The question felt dangerous, reckless.

Viktor smiled then, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “More than just something.” He tapped the folder. “Look here. A deal. Hidden in plain sight in Knox's records. 2009. Offshore accounts, shell companies. Your family name linked, just barely—like a ghost trapped in his machine.”

Her hands shook as she turned to the page he indicated. A faint watermark folded into the paper’s corner: “Confidential—Internal Use Only.” Scrawled beneath were entries from a company she barely recognized yet felt hauntingly familiar.

Leona Morgan.

Her mother’s name.

The ache in her chest sharpened, a secret wound reopening.

“There’s a paper trail,” Viktor said quietly. “Knox’s empire siphoned assets from your family’s trust. Three years before the collapse. They masked it as bad investments, but the truth’s uglier. It was deliberate.”

Isla closed the folder, heart slamming against ribs like a trapped bird trying to break free.

“Why show me this?” Her voice cracked.

“Because you deserve to know who you’re really dealing with,” Viktor said. “And because I need you to help me bring Knox down—if you want to.”

A cold, ruthless bargain stretched between them.

The city outside brightened slightly—streetlamps flickering, headlights weaving through endless lanes. The night wasn’t just a backdrop; it was an accomplice.

Isla’s mind roared with questions, but one stood taller—and deadlier—than the rest.

Her family’s ruin wasn’t just tragedy. It was sabotage. A deliberate stitch in a tapestry of power and control.

“And if I refuse?” Her eyes narrowed, steeling against the maelstrom in her chest.

“Then you keep living the lie that your past was just misfortune,” Viktor said, voice edged with something that almost, just nearly, sounded like pity. “But I doubt you can. Not after tonight.”

Isla swallowed the lump in her throat. She didn’t know how deep the rabbit hole went, but already she was falling.

A sudden knock shattered the charged silence.

They both froze.

Viktor’s eyes snapped to the door. “Didn’t expect anyone.”

Isla’s pulse thundered in her ears as the rigid door creaked open slowly.

A narrow envelope slid underneath, pressing flat against the dark wood.

No sender.

Viktor’s fingers closed around it fast, his expression unreadable. With a flick, he peeled it open.

Inside, a photograph spilled into his lap—grainy, black-and-white, edges worn.

The image froze time—a man with a familiar face standing beside Knox, shaking hands. But behind them loomed another shadow, barely visible—a symbol she’d never thought to connect with their world.

Her breath caught—etched beneath the photo in shaky handwriting: “The beginning of the end.”

Isla’s eyes met Viktor’s, searching for answers.

Silence stretched tight.

Neither dared speak.

Because the foundation beneath them was cracking fast.

And no one knew how far the fall would go.
