Chapter 7
Elara stood motionless on the cracked pavement, the night air crawling over her skin like a damp whisper. Her breath came in sharp, uneven bursts—a remix of adrenaline and icy dread clawing at her ribs. The distant hum of traffic blurred into an indistinct roar behind her ears, leaving only one sound clear: the hammering drum of blood in her temples.
Somewhere beyond the darkness, her name echoed again—Haunted, threatening.
A shiver traced a path down her spine as she forced her legs to move. One, two, three steps away from the spot where Sebastian had vanished into shadow like smoke. Her fingers tightened around the strap of her bag—the worn leather grounding her to reality. But reality had morphed into a maze she couldn’t yet navigate.
She pressed her back against the cold brick of a nearby building, each breath a shallow sharpness. The streetlights flickered, casting jagged, uncertain patterns that made the night seem alive—watching, waiting.
Her mind reeled. How had Sebastian known? Not just her name, but so much more. Too much.
The contract. The art studio. The fragile web she’d spent months weaving to protect her family’s legacy.
Her heart lurched with each pulse of doubt.
Could the betrayal be so close? So intimate?
Elara’s phone vibrated—a sudden buzz against the quiet night. She fumbled for it with trembling hands. The screen glowed with a single message from Quinn.
“Meet me. Now. We need to talk.”
Quinn.
Her best friend. The one person she’d trusted with secrets, with fears, with everything.
A flicker of unease curled around her chest.
Elara didn’t hesitate. The need for answers burned too ferociously to ignore.
---
The café was nearly deserted when Elara slipped inside, the murmur of early patrons fading beneath the low hum of neon and clinking silverware. Quinn was seated in the back corner, face obscured by shadows but body tense, hands clenched on the table’s edge.
“Elara,” Quinn’s voice was tight, brittle. “I’m glad you came.”
Elara’s eyes narrowed, a thread of steel weaving through her exhaustion. “What is this about? Why the urgency?”
Quinn didn’t meet her gaze. “I found out something. About Sebastian.”
Elara’s breath hitched. “What?”
Quinn glanced around, then leaned in, voice dropping. “He’s been digging. Deeper than you know. And he’s got someone feeding him information. Someone close.”
A cold blade slid through Elara’s chest. “Someone close? You mean—”
“I don’t know who yet. But it’s worse than I thought. It’s not just corporate secrets. I think he’s using personal information against you.”
Elara swallowed hard, the room tilting slightly as the walls closed in. “How do you know this?”
Quinn’s fingers trembled. “I overheard something at a meeting today—Sebastian was furious, calling someone a snake. He said he’d make sure the traitor paid.”
The pieces snapped with painful clarity.
“But if he knows there’s a mole... then that means—”
Quinn shook her head. “I thought I could find out who it is, but I haven’t been able to trace it.”
The weight of betrayal pressed down until Elara’s vision blurred.
“How long?” she whispered.
Quinn hesitated. “Long enough that Sebastian’s plan is almost complete. We don’t have much time.”
Her voice faltered. “Elara, whoever it is... they’re already working against you.”
Elara’s fists clenched on the cold steel edge of the table. “I need to know who.”
Quinn’s gaze flickered away again, a shadow crossing her face.
“I’m sorry,” she said, voice breaking.
Elara’s heart stuttered.
“Quinn?” The word was a fragile thread.
Her friend looked up. “I wanted to tell you sooner. But—”
The café door burst open with a sudden slam, a gust of cold swirling in behind a tall figure stepping into the light.
Heart in her throat, Elara’s eyes locked on the silhouette.
“Surprise,” the voice said—cool, deadly.
Quinn’s face went pale.
Sebastian.
And beside him, unmistakable.
A face Elara never expected.
The traitor.
