Chapter 1
Elara’s fingers trembled as the wretched contract slid across the marble table. The cold surface reflected the harsh overhead lights, casting a sterile glow on her worn palms. Outside the towering windows, the city’s skyline was a reckless pulse of neon and steel—beautiful, unyielding, and utterly indifferent.
“You understand what this means,” Nolan’s voice cut through the heavy silence, sharp as a blade under his polished calm. His eyes, dark and unreadable, locked onto hers with a predator’s precision. “Once signed, there’s no turning back.”
She swallowed, the lump in her throat growing as thick as the shadows pooling beneath the skyscrapers beyond. Her studio, just three blocks from this glittering lair, was drowning in overdue bills. Utility notices and eviction threats stacked like wildfire, devouring the fragile remnants of her independence.
A contract marriage to save her family’s art legacy. The words tasted like ash.
Elara forced a smile, the gesture brittle and hollow. “I suppose there’s no other option.” Her voice barely rose above a whisper, edged with grit.
“Nolan,” she said, the name tasting foreign on her tongue, “why me? Why extend your hand to someone on debtor’s knees?”
He leaned back, the ghost of a smirk tracing his sharp jawline. “Because you’re the only one who understands what’s at stake. Your family’s foundation is more valuable than you think. And frankly,” his gaze sharpened, “you have nowhere else to turn.”
Her eyes flicked to the contract again, the fine print an ocean of legalese designed to drown any hope she clung to. The overwhelming weight of desperation pressed on her chest, suffocating and relentless.
Her voice cracked as she finally spoke, “What exactly are you asking me to do?”
Nolan’s smile deepened, a glint of ice in his eyes. “Marry me. For one year. Legally bind our futures under one accord.” He tapped the document. “In return, your debts are erased, your family legacy preserved—untouched by vultures circling behind you.”
The air between them condensed, thick with unspoken dangers. Elara’s heartbeat hammered against her ribs, a wild drum of fear and defiance.
“Just one year,” Nolan added smoothly, “and you walk away clean. No questions asked.”
Her gaze dropped to the contract once more, scanning the endless paragraphs until something—a tiny phrase nestled like a venomous seed—caught her eye:
“Clause 47: The Spouse shall relinquish all personal claims to Nolan Enterprise assets during the term of the contract and acknowledge full confidentiality regarding all internal affairs and strategic operations.”
A rush of cold dread spilled down her spine.
She looked up, eyes wide and furious. “What is this? You expect me to be nothing more than a pawn?”
Nolan’s smile flickered, then vanished beneath a stare sharper than any blade. “It’s a marriage, Elara. But mark my words, it’s a war too.”
The deadline to sign loomed like a guillotine.
Her world had just tilted into darkness.
And the clock was already ticking.
