Unveiling the Enemy

Lila’s breath caught, the echo of the knock hammering against her ribcage like a sinister pulse. Her hand trembled on the doorknob, the polished wood slick with sweat she hadn’t realized she’d started to sweat.

Damian’s shadow loomed behind her, rigid and hulking. His eyes scanned the doorway with a predator’s precision—but even he didn’t move to open it.

“Tell me who—in the name of God, Lila, what did you hear?” His voice was low, rough-edged, the barest ripple of threat lacing through the demand.

She swallowed hard, trying to steady the storm waging inside her. The hallway beyond the door was too quiet, too sterile. The darkness seemed to fold in, waiting.

“I overheard Damien,” she whispered, the name tasting bitter on her tongue. “Talking to someone. Someone… about me. About what I’m hiding.” Her fingers clenched into fists. “He called me ‘the weak point.’ Said I could ruin everything.”

Damian’s jaw clenched so tight the veins flared at his temples. “Damien,” he repeated like a curse. “I thought I had him sussed out.”

Lila’s gaze flickered to his eyes, searching. For the first time, she saw cracks—not just in his empire, but in his armor. This wasn’t the untouchable titan she’d married under contract, this was a man battling ghosts.

“What do you mean?” Her voice was brittle, but she needed to know.

Damian exhaled sharply, stepping to the door, muscles coiling like a high-speed engine revving behind an iron wall. “He’s been feeding information to someone inside the boardroom. Someone who wants me vulnerable.”

A sudden flare of heat rose behind Lila’s eyes, the old fear she had worked so hard to bury pressing back. “Is it someone close? Someone you trust?”

The silence between them thickened until it suffocated.

Damian’s hand moved, fingers tapping twice on the door—a shorthand signal. The lock clicked silently, and the door eased open a fraction. Outside stood Damien—the protégé, the wolf in Damian’s inner circle—with a phone pressed to his ear, eyes darting like a startled rat caught in a trap.

The instant Damien’s gaze met theirs, his smile snapped into something colder, sharper.

“Trouble?” Damian’s voice was calm but carried a weight that crushed.

Damien’s smirk faltered. “Just tying up loose ends, boss.”

But the lie hung in the stale air.

Lila stepped forward, heart thudding loud enough to drown out the silence. “Who are you talking to?”

His eyes flicked to her—a brief flash of disdain? Recognition? She couldn’t tell—only that the smile was gone, replaced by something darker, more dangerous.

Damian’s eyes locked onto Damien’s. “Enough games. Who’s your contact?”

Before Damien could answer, Damian’s phone buzzed sharply in his pocket—a new message blasting across the screen.

Damian tugged it out, his expression draining of color as he read.

Lila caught the words before he could hide them:

“You’re tangled with more than you can handle. She’s your weakness, Damian. Protect her at your own peril, or lose everything. Midnight knows your secret.”

The room tilted.

“Midnight…” Lila’s voice was barely audible.

Damian’s fist slammed against the wall, cracking the pristine paint. “They know.”

Lila swallowed the raw acid rising in her throat. The enemy had already pulled the strings, and the game was far from over.

A cold wind seemed to seep through the cracked doorframe.

Somewhere in the shadows, Midnight was watching. And this time, there would be no running.

The knock came again—harder.

Damian stared at the message, eyes burning with fury and something else—fear.

“This isn’t just corporate sabotage,” he growled. “It’s war.”

Lila’s fingers curled into his shirt, steadying herself against the chaos.

“Then we fight back,” she said, voice fierce and trembling—in sync with the storm breaking around them.

But before either could move, the knock solidified into a harsh pound, deliberate and unyielding.

Damian’s gaze shifted sharply toward the door.

A breath crystallized in the space between heartbeats.

And then—

The door swung open.

Silence.

But the dark figure framed in the threshold was nothing like they expected.

The game had just flipped.

And the enemy inside the empire was no longer hidden.

Because Midnight just stepped through the door.

Lila’s secret wasn’t safe anymore.

Not by a long shot.
