Chapter 4
Lila’s breath hitched, her fingers pressing against the armrest of the leather chair as the world spun beneath her. The low hum of the city outside smothered into a distant roar, the sterile corporate lights throbbing like distant sirens in her vision.
“They’re coming.” The weight of Damian’s words dug into her gut, sharp and cold as broken glass.
She met his gaze—dark and steely—but beneath it, a flicker of something raw, vulnerable. Something desperate.
Outside the massive glass window, the skyscrapers gleamed like icy monoliths under the midnight sky. But in that moment, the room felt like a cage closing tight.
Before she could force herself upright, the faint trembling in her hands betrayed the storm inside. Her heart hammered wildly—panic or adrenaline, she couldn’t say. Only the ancient, familiar dread twisting ever tighter.
Damian snapped his phone shut, jaw clenched until the tendons stood out like knotted ropes. “Get ready,” he ordered, voice low, but no one moved.
The knock shattered the thick silence—three sharp raps, deliberate, unyielding. Lila flinched, her skin prickling beneath the sudden chill sweeping through the room.
Damian’s fist slammed onto the polished mahogany desk. “It’s them.”
The door creaked open a fraction. A figure stepped inside—thin, casual, dangerous. A ghost from the past.
Lila froze, muscles tightening like a coiled wire.
The man’s eyes flicked to Damian before settling on her, a crooked smirk breaking across his lean face.
“Lila Hart.” The name hissed out without warmth, as though tasting something bitter. “You’ve been hard to find.”
Lila’s pulse skipped, the air around her thickening, tight with the scent of burning secrets she’d tried to bury years ago.
Her mind flickered back—sharp images flashing like lightning bolts:
A rundown studio apartment.
The sharp, acrid smell of cigarette smoke.
A scream that never left her ears.
The terrible mistake.
The promise she made—never to look back.
But here it was, clawing into the present with filthy fingers wrapped around her throat.
She swallowed hard, voice barely above a whisper, “What do you want?”
The visitor stepped closer, eyes scanning her face as though trying to peel back layers.
“Oh, it’s not what I want,” he said, voice low, conspiratorial. “It’s what they want.”
Damian’s gaze sharpened, warning flashing in his eyes—but Lila held his stare. This wasn’t his fight, not yet.
It never was meant to be.
The visitor produced a slim envelope from his jacket—paper creased and weathered, the edges curled like a forgotten memory.
“Open it. You need to see this.”
Lila’s fingers trembled as she broke the seal, unfolding the letter inch by agonizing inch.
Her breath caught cold.
The words scrawled in messy handwriting, the date stamped at the top—it all shattered years of silence.
Damian stepped forward, breaking the fragile moment, voice hard as steel.
“Explain.”
The visitor’s smirk deepened. “Looks like someone’s past just caught up with them.”
Lila’s gaze snapped to Damian—fear, defiance, and something locked deep inside swirling like wildfire.
She clenched the letter in her fist, tearing the paper slowly as she refused to break.
A single name scrawled within the text made her eyes widen.
That name was a key—one that could unlock everything she’d fought to keep hidden.
Electric tension crackled in the small room as the visitor leaned in, voice dropping to a whisper that sliced the air.
“How long can you run from the truth, Lila?”
Her breath trembled, heart pounding in a furious rhythm.
Because in that moment... she knew.
The ghosts weren’t just memories anymore.
They were coming to drag her back—whether she was ready or not.
The knock came again—louder, more urgent.
The door creaked, then pushed open slowly to reveal a shadowed figure watching from the threshold.
Lila’s eyes darted between the visitor, Damian, and the dark silhouette at the door.
Each breath was a battle—each second stretched tight as a drawn wire.
Then, with a sudden, jarring clarity, the visitor’s eyes locked with hers.
“There’s no hiding now.”
And just like that, the fragile line of safety shattered under the weight of a name she thought she’d buried forever.
The room fell into suffocating silence, broken only by the visitor’s voice.
“Your secret’s out.”
Lila’s world tilted again—and beneath the veneer of control, everything was unraveling.
She looked up—and froze.
The shadow at the threshold was no stranger.
It was someone connected to the darkest corner of her history.
Someone who knew all the lies.
Someone who held the power to destroy her.
Her throat tightened, air snagged painfully.
A whispered accusation—the truth she never dared speak.
In the sharp gleam of the city’s endless lights, the past slithered in.
And this time, there was nowhere left to hide.
