Chapter 3

First Night of Strangers

The elevator’s hum swallowed the silence between them, the cold gleam of brushed steel pressing against Lila’s nerves like a cage.

Damian’s eyes never left hers. Not with curiosity, not with kindness—they bore a weight, sharp and unshakable.

“First night of strangers,” he murmured, voice low, gravelly. “A fresh page. A clean slate. You can’t erase the past, but you can choose the story we write from here.”

“No promises,” she said, voice brittle, but she swallowed the tremor in her throat.

The doors clicked open with a mechanical sigh, revealing the cavernous lobby of his mansion. Marble floors stretched toward soaring glass walls, catching the city’s neon heartbeat outside and fracturing it into a thousand tiny prisms across the ground.

Lila’s suitcase wheels tapped hollowly in the cavernous space.

“Lila,” Damian called after her, stepping forward but stopping short of touching her. A deliberate distance that felt like a blade's length.

She paused, feeling the electric charge of his gaze burning into her skin.

“This isn’t hospitality,” he said. “It’s control. But you need to see it—to feel it. You’ll learn fast.”

They ascended the staircase, each step groaning under the weight of unspoken threats.

At the top, the corridor stretched on, walls hung with forbidding portraits that seemed to watch, their eyes glittering in the dim light like predators.

Her room was at the far end—an austere chamber of obsidian and silver, sleek and impersonal.

She set her bags down on the polished floor, the cold biting at her bare ankles.

Damian closed the door behind her. The click echoed—a seal.

“I’ll give you the tour in the morning,” he said, voice distant, almost reluctant.

“Right,” she whispered.

He hesitated, then added, “Sleep well, Lila. You’ll need it.”

Alone, she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.

The faint buzz of the city seeped through the glass, a reminder she was trapped inside a gilded cage.

Her fingers grazed the edge of the window. Outside, skyscrapers pierced the night like hungry jaws, their windows flickering with lives she couldn’t touch.

Her phone buzzed softly on the nightstand.

A text: Don’t trust him. Not fully.

She froze, the message sharp as a shard.

Who would warn her? And why now?

A sharp knock startled her.

The door hovered open a fraction.

Damian’s shadow flooded the threshold.

“You’re reading my texts,” he said, voice calm but deadly.

Her heart convulsed. “Whose warning was that?”

He stepped fully inside, eyes narrowing.

“We both carry secrets, Lila. Secrets that could kill us.”

Before she could answer, his phone chimed aggressively.

He snatched it up. The screen flashed a single word: Danger.

His jaw clenched. “They’re coming.”

The room tilted.

And just like that, the fragile line between contract and conspiracy shattered.
