Chapter 2

Signed by Midnight

The ink on the contract shimmered beneath the crystal chandelier’s glow, catching every flicker of her wavering resolve.

Lila’s breath hitched, a sharp hitch that spread icy fingers down her spine. Her fingers trembled, not from the cold but from the weight pressing on her—like the sharp edge of a blade just inches from her throat. Every instinct screamed to pull back, to rip the fragile paper to shreds and run. But she didn’t move.

Instead, her pen hovered.

The clock on the marble wall groaned toward midnight.

Outside, the city roared—its glittering towers punching into the night sky, oblivious to the small, suffocating cell of tension inside Damian Cross’s penthouse office.

His dark eyes didn’t leave her face. They didn’t soften. No trace of impatience, only that disturbing stillness, like a hawk sizing up its next move.

“You understand what this means,” Damian intoned, voice low and deliberate, folding around the silence like a snake. “Once you sign, there’s no turning back, Lila.”

She swallowed thickly, the bitter taste of fear instantly replaced by something colder, sharper. Defiance? Or the stubborn flicker of hope that maybe—just maybe—she could control this.

Her hands shook visibly now—the pen finally resting against the parchment.

“I’m not a pawn,” she whispered, voice breaking under the weight of unsaid truths. “I’m not here because I want to be.”

“That doesn’t matter.” He leaned forward, shadows playing across the sharp angles of his face. “What matters is what you’re willing to do to survive.”

Lila willed the warmth back into her fingers. The meaningless rebellion died on her tongue. She forced the pen to move, the nib catching against the textured paper with a scratch that seemed deafening in the heavy silence.

“Signed by midnight,” she murmured, voice strangled but resolute. Her signature bloomed in thick loops beneath the terms—tight claws locking her fate to his.

Damian’s smile flickered then—a brief, unreadable flash—before folding back into that cold mask.

“Good.” His voice was soft, almost casual. “You’ll find the first terms of our arrangement begin at dawn.”

The curve of his mouth held a secret, one darker than the sharp lines cutting across the skyline behind him.

Lila looked up sharply, heart thrumming as unease settled over her like a cold rain. His eyes glittered with something dangerous, something unreadable beneath that polished surface.

“What aren’t you telling me?” she asked, voice harder now.

He slid the pen from her fingers, letting the contract fall to the glossy mahogany desk—a silent barrier between them.

“Everything you need to know will come in time,” he said, eyes pinning hers like a challenge. “For now, just remember: the world we’ve entered isn’t a game. And neither of us is playing for second place.”

Her skin prickled with heat, the adrenaline crawling beneath her skin.

The city’s hum seeped through the glass—a restless beast just beyond this tower, threatening to claw its way inside.

Damian stood, the silk of his tailored suit whispering as he moved to the window.

The city lights reflected in his eyes—bright, jagged, impossible to read.

“Midnight,” he murmured, more to himself than to her. “A time of beginnings and endings. We’re no longer strangers, Lila. We’re bound by this contract. And by something far darker.”

She swallowed again, the chill knotting in her gut tightening.

His smile returned, colder, sharper.

But behind it—a shadow flickered.

A secret.

Waiting.

Until now.
