Chapter 6

Vivian’s Poisoned Offer

Layla’s chest heaved, the residual sting of Vivian’s words graze-burning beneath her skin. The sharp click of high heels echoed through the polished hallway as Vivian’s silhouette receded, the final curve of her smirk etched like a threat in the air.

Damien’s jaw tightened beside her, but his usual fortress of composed steel seemed fractured — almost brittle.

“Ignore her,” he muttered, but the tremor in his voice betrayed him.

Ignoring wasn’t an option.

The apartment’s warm light suddenly felt too bright, too exposed. Layla’s fingers curled into fists, knuckles pale. Somewhere behind the glittering champagne glasses and the hum of distant music, the undercurrent of war surged unseen.

Her phone buzzed—a vibration sharp enough to slice through her spiraling thoughts. The screen lit up with her sister’s name: Maya.

Has the medicine arrived? she typed frantically, thumbs trembling.

No reply.

The fragile hope that had anchored her these past weeks threatened to snap like brittle glass.

Damien caught the flicker of panic in her eyes, stepping closer. “I’ll make a call,” he said, already fishing his phone from his pocket.

“Wait,” Layla’s voice dropped urgent. “No… let me. This is my fight.”

Her gaze burned with determination, but inside, a cold shadow curled. Vivian’s venomous words clung to her—She’s your weakness.

The elevator dinged. A sudden hush fell over the lobby as a slender woman in a muted gray coat slid inside.

Layla’s breath hitched.

Vivian.

Her eyes met Layla’s with the icy gleam of a predator sizing up prey.

She didn’t speak. Just that chilling smile — razor-sharp and devoid of warmth.

Layla’s ribs ached, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm like deafening drums. What was Vivian playing at? How deep did the poison run?

Later that night, Layla found herself pacing the marble floor of her apartment, a threadbare scarf pulled tight against the chill. Maya’s diagnosis wasn’t stable — every treatment a gamble. Vivian’s shadow hovered over every hospital visit, every whispered consultation.

Then, the call came — piercing, impossible to ignore. It was from an unknown number.

“Ms. Monroe,” a familiar silky voice purred. “I trust you’re considering my proposition.”

Layla’s hand trembled as the weight of the heresy sunk in.

“Stop playing games, Vivian. What do you want?”

“Something very simple,” Vivian said smoothly. “I hold the key to your sister’s care. And you—your husband’s empire—your very future—are the currency.”

A shot rang out in the silent night of Layla’s mind.

“No,” Layla breathed. “You wouldn’t.”

“Oh, but I will. I already have.”

The line went dead.

Her breath fogged the glass as she stared out at the city’s glittering facade. Bright lights masking endless shadows.

Next morning, beneath the sterile hum of hospital corridors, Layla’s steps faltered near the nurses’ station. A muffled conversation caught her ear—sharp whispers slicing through the sterile white walls.

“Maya’s medication schedule... it’s been altered,” a nurse said, voice low but urgent.

“Did you report it?” another replied.

“No. Orders came straight from Dr. Cross. We can’t intervene.”

Layla’s heart twisted in cold knots. Dr. Cross—Vivian’s name whispered even here.

She retreated into an empty hallway, pressing her back against the cool steel of a hospital cart, breath hitching as a heavy shadow coiled in her chest.

And then, beneath the sterile hum, footsteps approached—slow, deliberate.

“Ms. Monroe,” a voice breathed.

Turning quickly, Layla found herself face-to-face with Vivian.

“What are you doing here?” Layla’s voice was steel wrapped in desperation.

Vivian stepped closer, eyes flashing with cruel delight.

“Oh, just keeping a close eye on the game,” she murmured. “You see, Maya’s well-being isn’t just a matter of medicine—it’s leverage. My leverage. And you—”

“You won’t use her to hurt me,” Layla snapped, voice breaking, fury blazing like wildfire.

“That’s where you’re wrong,” Vivian whispered, lips curling. “I hold the strings, darling. And soon—both our families will learn what happens when those strings are pulled.”

Before Layla could respond, Vivian’s phone buzzed sharply. She glanced at the screen, amusement flashing for the briefest heartbeat.

“Shall we say… tonight at the gala? Secrets don’t stay buried forever, Layla. Be ready.”

With that, Vivian swept away, leaving behind a cold draft filled with unspoken threats.

Layla’s fingers curled into the fabric of her coat as an icy realization settled deep in her bones.

Vivian’s game was no longer just about power.

It was about destruction.

And Layla just heard the opening move.

She wasn’t prepared.

Not yet.

But she had no choice but to face it head-on.

Footsteps echoed down the hall again.

A soft whisper reached her ears.

“...everything falls tonight.”

Layla’s breath caught on the edge of a scream, blinking as a dim light flickered—

And then the door across the corridor creaked open.

Inside, unreadable faces gathered, shadows shifting in the half-light.

Vilified whispers hung heavy in the air, and Layla caught a piece of the conversation frozen like ice in her blood:

“...the contracts... the families... all unraveled. No one sees it coming.”

Her stomach clenched so fiercely it felt like it might collapse inward.

Because in that hallway, hidden just beyond the cracked door, the architect of ruin was already laying her trap.

Vivian.

And nothing would ever be the same.
