Chapter 5
The sharp scrape of heels echoed down the marbled corridor, a staccato beat cutting through the heavy silence that clung to Ella’s skin. She slid her back off the chill stone wall, muscles trembling as the rapid thump of her own heartbeat settled into a fierce, insistent drum. The world beyond the shadowed alcove glittered with a hundred chandeliers, their crystal prisms refracting light onto the polished floor like fragments of broken promises.
Her breath came uneven, a raw taste of iron lingering at the back of her mouth. The faint scent of expensive perfume—jasmine and something spicy—wafted past her, carried by the swarm of impeccably dressed guests making their way into the grand ballroom. The air inside must have been warm, suffused with the hum of whispered alliances and concealed agendas.
Her fingers curled tightly around the silk of her gown, a tether between the chaos racing inside her and the poised exterior she was forced to present. Each second fed the coiling tension in her chest, a tightening no medicine could soothe.
"You okay?" The voice came like a gentle ripple, yet held a low edge of concern. Ella’s eyes snapped upward to see Sebastian Hawthorne stepping into the dimming shadows of the corridor. His sharp jaw was angled in that familiar way—strangled impatience wrapped in a veneer of smooth control.
She swallowed, forcing the tremor from her lips. "Just... needed a moment," she breathed, voice barely more than a breath.
He studied her with that calculating gaze, dark eyes flickering with something unreadable. "You sure? You look like you just saw a ghost."
The corners of her mouth twitched, a shadow of a smile threatening but never quite breaking through the tension. “Not far from it.”
Sebastian folded his arms, the imported Italian fabric of his suit—tailored so perfectly it seemed a second skin—creasing just slightly over the elbow. "We’re here to survive the night, Ella, not to unravel inside these marble walls." His tone was sharp but not unkind.
She nodded, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The gala awaited just beyond, a crucible of glittering eyes and whispered power plays. To the untrained ear, it was just another night of champagne and pleasantries; beneath, every laugh could slice like a blade, every smile a veiled challenge.
Turning toward the glowing doorway, Ella stepped forward, Sebastian following close, his presence a steady force against the swirling anxiety.
Inside, the ballroom breathed with life.
Crystal glasses chimed in toasts, laughter bubbled over rich velvet drapes, and sliced across it all was the subtle strain of a string quartet—its haunting melody threading through conversations laden with underlying threat.
The crowd parted as they entered, eyes sharp and curious like quicksilver. Whispers rippled—"Is that Ella Bennett?" "Married to Hawthorne? What’s he playing at?"
Ella’s spine stiffened. Every look chipped away at the fragile mask of the heiress turned reluctant bride.
Behind the veneer of opulence, she felt their hunger—the silent calculation of predators trying to measure weakness.
Sebastian’s hand brushed briefly against hers, a deliberate anchor. His grip was firm, fingers curling possessively, but his eyes scanned the room with predatory alertness.
They moved through clusters of champagne-draped aristocrats and ruthless magnates, nodding with practiced ease, exchanging pleasantries lacquered with shallow smiles.
A man in a tailored tuxedo approached, his smile too wide, teeth gleaming with false warmth. The glitter of a diamond cufflink caught Ella’s eye as he extended a hand toward Sebastian.
“Sebastian Hawthorne. Always a pleasure.” His voice was smooth, but the undercurrent was a challenge wrapped in civility.
Sebastian’s gaze sharpened. “Chad Avery.” The name was clipped, icy.
Chad’s eyes flicked to Ella, a flicker of calculation beneath the surface charm. “I didn’t expect you’d bring company tonight, Hawthorne. And to a gala like this? Something interesting brewing?”
A slow smile crept across Sebastian’s face, but it was the smile of a wolf baring his teeth behind a mask. “Let’s just say, alliances are fluid these days.”
Ella felt the temperature drop, a cold draft of tension swirling between them like a storm crouching at the edge of calm seas.
Chad’s chuckle was low. “Always a game with you.”
Sebastian’s gaze never wavered. “Especially when the stakes are high.”
Before the moment could fracture further, a soft, deliberate cough cut through the space beside them.
Ella turned, catching the edge of the movement—a man stepping into their periphery. His features were unfamiliar, but his eyes held a steely weight that froze the air.
Sebastian’s posture stiffened, shoulders tensing like a coiled spring.
“You shouldn’t have come here, Marcus,” Sebastian said quietly, voice laced with a dark edge.
The newcomer’s smile was thin, devoid of warmth. “I had to. Some ghosts refuse to stay buried.”
Ella’s pulse skyrocketed, skin prickling with a sensation of imminent collision—of past wounds tearing open in front of a room full of witnesses.
Chad’s smirk faltered, the glint of amusement in his eyes replaced by a flicker of unease.
Sebastian’s fingers clenched behind his back, a silent battle raging beneath his composed exterior.
Ella swallowed hard, feeling the fragile thread of their uneasy alliance stretching taut, ready to snap.
And then Marcus leaned in just enough so only Sebastian could hear. “You owe more than apologies, Hawthorne. You owe the truth.”
A breath caught in the room. The crowd’s chatter dimmed, senses sharp as predators sniffing the scent of blood.
Ella’s eyes darted between Sebastian’s clenched jaw and the stranger’s unreadable gaze.
The glittering facade cracked.
A secret began to bleed through.
And in that suspended heartbeat, the room held its breath.
The night had just begun—and with it, the fractures of a battle no one dared name.
Then, a soft but commanding voice broke the silence.
“Sebastian. Care to explain why your past is showing up uninvited?”
The stranger’s eyes held hers for a split second—a silent warning.
Ella realized this was no random encounter.
It was the opening move in a war neither she nor Sebastian could afford to lose.
