Rules of Engagement

A hollow quiet settled between them, thick and suffocating like a winter fog pressing against skin. Ella's breath came shallow, each exhale trembling like a tremor through her chest. The room smelled faintly of expensive leather and something metallic—her pulse thudding in time with the slow drip of tension.

Sebastian’s gaze no longer pinned her with the blaze of challenge. Instead, it was guarded—an iron wall suddenly shuttered behind those sharp, unreadable eyes.

He broke the silence with a crisp, deliberate tone, “Before we proceed, there are rules. Boundaries you must understand—because missteps won’t just cost you, Ella.”

She blinked, the sudden gravity of his voice folding inward like an unseen trap. The corners of the contract rested heavily between them; a fragile paper tiger hiding barbs beneath gilded clauses.

“I’m listening,” she said, voice brittle but steady.

Sebastian’s fingers raked through his dark hair in a slow gesture of impatience. “This is not a marriage of love, nor pretense. It’s a transaction. A necessity to shield your family’s legacy from ruin—and, frankly, to serve my own ends.”

Ella’s blink faltered for a heartbeat. His blunt honesty hit harder than expected.

“No surprises,” he continued. “You will attend public engagements as my wife. You will comport yourself accordingly—grace, discretion, obedience in appearance. You will not interfere with my business matters. There are no exceptions.”

She swallowed, the tiny flame of rebellion sparking at the word ‘obedience.’ Her fingers curled into fists beneath the table, aching to shatter glass or speak sharp truths. Instead, she nodded.

“And in return?” Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“A shared front. Protection for your family’s company from taking a fatal blow. It’s your lifeline. Your compliance is my collateral.”

He leaned forward then, eyes narrowing. “If you breach this contract, or if the alliance jeopardizes my interests, consequences will be immediate—and severe. There will be no second chances.”

The chilling finality in his words made Ella’s skin break out in goosebumps.

“So,” she forced the words, voice raw, “we’re married by midnight. I’m the star. The pawn. And I’m bound to play the role perfectly or else…”

“Exactly,” Sebastian said quietly, his tone a cold whisper that sent a tremor through the room.

The air between them crackled—electrified, dangerous.

Ella swallowed away the sting of humiliation and reprisal, her mind racing. If she stumbled, the ruin she feared wouldn’t just fall upon her family. It might swallow her whole.

She glanced down at the contract again, the ink mocking her. But beneath the bleak terms, a kernel of something stubborn flickered—the raw determination to survive this game on her own terms.

Sebastian stood abruptly, the scrape of his chair on the marble floor echoing like a warning.

“Dinner with the board tonight. You’ll be there. First impression matters far more than you think.”

Before she could respond, the sharp ring of his phone shattered the fragile veil between them. He lifted it to his ear with a practiced, detached air.

Ella took a step back, eyes flicking toward the doorway, heartbeat staccato.

She should have left.

But some thread pulled her feet into silence.

Sebastian lowered his voice, words clipped and urgent, eyes darting toward the hall.

“Yes, it’s done. But I don’t trust him. There’s a leak somewhere—closer than we thought.”

Ella’s blood chilled. Betrayal whispered between the syllables, curling its cold fingers around her gut.

“Who?” the voice on the other end was muffled, but laced with menace.

Sebastian didn’t answer.

Instead, he said, “Keep watch. If the plan fails, the fall will be fatal.”

A pause cracked the conversation.

Then, “We cannot let her find out.”

Ella’s breath caught in her throat.

Find out what?

Her fingers trembled on the doorframe as a shadow crossed the corridor. The creak of sneakers pausing just beyond her hiding place.

She pressed herself against the cold wall, heart pounding an urgent rhythm in her ears.

And swallowed the dread that maybe, tonight, the greatest danger wasn’t the contract binding her—but the secrets unraveling beneath them all.
