Chapter 6

The Shadow of the Past

The room held its breath.

Lila’s pulse hammered against her ribs like a wild drum — an erratic rhythm drowned in the lingering silence between them. The tension, once crackling and volatile, had distilled into something heavier. A quiet storm brewing beneath Ethan’s impeccable suit and beneath her trembling skin.

He turned away first, the sharp crease of his jaw the only sign of his fury. “You want answers? Start digging where the dirt is deepest.”

Her fingers flexed against the edge of the glass table, the cool surface biting through the thin fabric of her blouse. The city lights beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows flickered like distant promises—cold, unreachable.

“What do you mean ‘where the dirt is deepest’?” She swallowed, voice tight. “If you know something—anything—about my father’s downfall, now is the time to tell me.”

Ethan’s eyes flicked back, lightning quick, dark as storm clouds. “Do you think business is a fair fight? That fortunes crumble without a blade in the dark?”

Lila’s jaw clenched. She hated the way he spoke—layers of veiled menace wrapped in silk. “I don’t care about fair. I care about the truth.”

He took a slow step toward her, his presence a shadow stretching across the room. The scent of expensive cologne mixed with a faint trace of something colder—steel, maybe. “Your father’s empire fell because he underestimated what it takes to survive this city.”

Her mind whipped back to late nights poring over old newspapers, financial reports with red ink bleeding through margins. The rumors, the whispers that had accused Ethan’s company of hostile takeovers and ruthless tactics. “So you’re saying you… orchestrated it?”

The words clawed their way out, bitter and accusing.

Ethan’s laugh was low, almost amused. “Orchestrated? No. I leveraged an opportunity. Your father made a mistake—a fatal one. I simply... exploited it.”

It felt like a slap, sharp and raw.

Lila’s stomach twisted. “So you admit it. You’re behind this.”

“There’s a difference between being behind something and being the cause.” His gaze sliced through her, impatient. “If you want to find real answers, you have to dig deeper than headlines and rumors.”

Her breath hitched. “How deep?”

He stepped back, the mask of indifference snapping back over his expression. “Deep enough to see the rot beneath your family’s golden facade.”

For a moment, the air between them was suffocating—heavy with unspoken truths and barbed accusations.

Then Lila’s phone buzzed sharply, the vibration slicing through the charged atmosphere.

She snatched it up, eyes narrowing at the screen. An unknown number.

Her hand hovered, trembling.

“Open it,” Ethan said quietly, voice stripped of its usual edge.

She pressed ‘accept’.

A distorted voice whispered through the line, hushed and urgent.

“They’re watching you. Stop digging, or more than your father’s empire will fall.”

The call ended abruptly.

Lila’s heart seized. The room spun slightly, shadows lurching at the corners.

Ethan’s expression darkened—something raw flickering beneath the polished surface. “Welcome to my world.”

She swallowed past the knot tightening in her throat. “Why protect me if this could hurt you?”

His gaze hovered, flickering uncertain for the first time since their stormy encounter. “Because some debts can’t be paid with money.”

The city’s distant hum seeped through the glass, a reminder that outside, a world much larger—and far more dangerous—was watching.

Her mind raced. If Ethan was the key to her father’s fall, then what else had he twisted in the shadows? And more terrifying—what secrets did the billionaire hide that could crumble not just their worlds, but the fragile thread binding them together?

A cold knock echoed from the door behind them.

Both froze, eyes snapping toward the sound.

Neither moved.

Because in that single, weighted moment, the question burned hotter than any accusation: Could Ethan Blackwood be the architect of her family’s destruction—and if so, was he friend, enemy... or something far worse?

The knock came again—sharper, insistent.

Lila’s breath caught.

The silent war between them had only just begun.
