Chapter 4

House of Cold Steel

Cold silence swallowed the room after the woman’s words hung between them—sharp, fragile, like glass threatening to shatter.

Ethan’s jaw clenched so tightly the tendons pulsed at his temples. His eyes darkened; a storm brewing behind that iron mask. He turned away from the whisper, voice low and clipped. “Enough. Let’s move.”

Lila’s chest constricted. The air, already suffused with tension, slid down her throat heavy and metallic. She swallowed, dizzy from the swirl of unspoken threats. The thrill of dread nestled its claws deep in her gut.

The city glittered beyond the widened glass windows, a kaleidoscope of light and shadows. But inside here—inside Ethan’s world—it was strip vanilla. Cold white walls, sharp edges of steel furniture, echoes of footsteps swallowed by thick carpets.

She trailed behind him, every step a reminder she was an intruder in a kingdom that didn’t want her. The scent of polished concrete and ozone hooked in the air, sterile and antiseptic, unlike the labyrinth of paint fumes and cracked canvases back home.

“Welcome to my house,” Ethan said, voice like gravel grinding beneath a velvet glove.

Lila almost laughed at the absurdity. It was more fortress than home. The heavy door sealed shut behind her with a surgical click, and the silence seemed to press in from all sides. Not a soft breath of warmth, not a hint of color.

He led her through the ground floor—minimalist, cold modernism on steroids. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered panoramic views of the city skyline, but every reflection shimmered as if filtered through ice.

“This is your wing,” Ethan said, opening an expansive door that revealed a bedroom she could have lost herself in, if it weren’t so utterly forbidding. Sleek black panels lined the walls; furniture was sharp, unyielding.

“I—I don’t need much,” she managed, voice cracking under the weight of unfamiliarity.

“Then this will do.” His eyes bored into hers, unyielding. “It’s not about comfort. This is where you sleep. Where you exist, for now.”

Her fingers brushed the glass surface of the nightstand. It was impossibly cold. The kind of cold that seeped under skin and stayed, leaving brittle shadows behind.

She sank onto the edge of the bed, feeling like a ghost caught in a hostile play. The unsettling quiet around her vibrated with power, menace—an invisible cage.

Hours crawled by. Somewhere in the distance, the city hum grew muted, as if swallowed beneath Ethan’s fortress walls.

A sudden creak shattered the stillness—a floorboard protesting under invisible weight.

Lila’s heart jumped. Hands clenched in her lap, palms damp, her breath shallow and trembling.

She rose, instincts prickling, senses sharp and searching in the dim glow of the bedside lamp.

Drawn by an impulsive hope laced with cautious fear, she padded toward the hallway. A faint sliver of light leaked beneath the door at the far end—the private study, no doubt.

The door’s surface gleamed black under her fingers, unnervingly sleek. A metallic pulse thrummed faintly through the walls, barely perceptible but there.

She hesitated. Then, ignoring the echo of logic screaming to retreat, she pressed her ear against the cold veneer.

Voices—low, urgent—surged through the slight crack.

“… can’t risk it leaking. If the board finds out, it’s over.”

“Ethan’s not just hiding mistakes anymore,” another whispered, voice tense, tight as a wire about to snap. “This goes beyond bad deals. It’s dangerous.”

Lila’s breath hitched. A chill swept over her, a ripple in the glass-clear surface of order she’d assumed his life was.

Footsteps approached. She darted back, heart hammering, muscles trembling.

The door swung open suddenly. Ethan stood there, face unreadable but deadly calm.

“You don’t belong here,” he said, voice low, cold.

Her pulse thundered in her ears. Words faltered on her lips, caught between fear and defiance.

A flash of vulnerability crossed his face—barely a flicker—but it was there.

“This isn’t just a house,” he murmured, almost to himself. “It’s a cage... and a battleground.”

Lila swallowed hard, inches from unraveling, knowing the truth was deeper, darker, and far more dangerous than she’d dared imagine.

Then, from the shadows behind him, a new presence emerged—a silhouette framed by cold steel and sharp light:

“What exactly did you hear?” The voice sliced through the silence, razor-sharp.

Lila’s fingers curled into trembling fists. Tonight, the fortress walls weren’t just keeping her out—they were closing in fast, suffocating, revealing a secret that could shatter everything she thought she knew.

Her heart screamed, but her mind sharpened to steel:

She needed to uncover the truth. No matter the cost.
