Terms of the Contract

The pen clicked against the smooth paper, finalizing the deal, but Lila Harper’s breath didn’t find its rhythm again. The room felt suddenly colder—as if the ink seeping into the page had bled a frigid pulse through the air. Her fingers trembled, still clutching the edge of the polished mahogany desk, knuckles blanching in stark contrast.

Behind the wall-to-wall windows, the city twinkled, oblivious. Lights danced, cars roared distantly, and somewhere, a siren screamed—a jagged wail that sliced into the silence of Ethan Blackwood’s penthouse.

Lila swallowed, her throat a dry cavern. “I—I didn’t realize…” Her voice cracked, fragile as a shard of glass. “How long is this contract supposed to last?”

Ethan Blackwood’s gaze didn’t waver. His storm-dark eyes framed by sharp cheekbones were like a predator measuring his next move. He leaned forward, the crisp lines of his tailored suit folding with cold precision.

“Two years,” he stated, voice low and unyielding. “Strictly binding, no exceptions.” His hand swept the contract toward her with a metallic finality. “You live with me. Attend public events as my wife. Maintain appearances. That’s it.”

Lila blinked, heart pounding like a trapped bird.

“Appearances,” she echoed.

“Yes.” His lips pressed into a flat line. “This isn’t a fairy tale, Lila. The city whispers rumors about me, about my empire. I need something—or rather, someone—to silence that noise. To keep creditors and competitors guessing. You play your part; I handle the rest.”

The words landed between them like cinders, searing yet cold. Lila’s mind whirled: live under his roof? Share his life—an existence she hadn’t bargained for, riddled with invisible chains and constant surveillance.

“Do I have any say?” Her voice sharpened despite the tremor remaining. “If I agree to this, I’m not just a name on paper.”

Ethan’s gaze flickered—just for a moment—with a shadow of something unreadable before the mask slipped back.

“You don’t,” he said simply.

A hollow ache flared—rejection, denial, and something heavier: suffocation.

Her thoughts jumped to her father’s hollow eyes, to the pile of bills fluttering like dead leaves on her cluttered apartment floor. She clenched her fists, nails biting into her palms.

“And what about the rumors?” she dared, leaning forward. “What secret are you so desperate to bury that you need a fake marriage?”

His jaw tightened, dark lashes brushing his cheekbones. “That’s not your concern.”

But the trembling in his voice betrayed him.

There was more. A layer beneath the ice.

Lila’s pulse stuttered.

She forced a bitter smile.

“Fine. What about... boundaries? Personal freedom? Independence?”

Ethan’s eyes blazed. “You’ll follow one rule, above all: no crossing into my business. No unsolicited questions. No digging.”

She met his challenge, words sparking like shattered glass.

“And if I refuse?”

“Then this agreement ends before it begins.” The threat hung between them, as lethal and cold as the city’s night breeze.

Lila’s jaw locked. She wanted to scream, to reject, to run away into the underground art shows where she once felt free. But the weight of desperation anchored her.

A long silence stretched—fragile and tense.

Then Ethan’s phone vibrated sharply beside him, the sudden noise cracking the atmosphere. He ignored it but glanced briefly, a crease breaking his usually flawless composure.

Lila’s gaze darted, sensing layers unspoken.

“Why are you really so eager for this arrangement?” she pressed, voice lowering. “What makes you so afraid of the truth coming out?”

His grip around the armrest tightened, knuckles whitening beneath the leather.

“The less you know, the safer you stay.”

A bitter laugh escaped her lips. “Safe?”

His eyes flashed with something dangerous, vulnerable.

The city lights outside blurred into streaks as rain began to fall, tapping cold rhythms against the glass.

Lila’s mind raced, heart still pounding.

What secret was Ethan Blackwood willing to cage behind a contract marriage? And how deeply was she about to fall into his world of steel, shadows, and silent demands?

The question burned between them, heavier than words.

A knock suddenly echoed from the door—sharp, unexpected.

Ethan’s head snapped toward the sound, eyes narrowed.

The door creaked open.

A woman’s voice—soft but commanding—cut into the thick air.

“Mr. Blackwood, there’s something you should see. Now.”
