Chapter 8
The knock echoed through the hollow silence like a gunshot. Kara’s breath hitched inside her chest—a sharp, crackling wire of tension that stretched tight and trembling. She forced her fingers to unclench the torn edge of her sleeve, fingers numb but trembling with the ghost burn of adrenaline. The second knock came, heavier, more urgent. No polite prelude here.
Her heartbeat drummed a fierce tattoo inside her ears, drowning out the low hum of whispers from somewhere beyond the heavy oak door. The air smelled of damp earth and fading storm, then—something sharp and unnatural. Metallic, like blood on hot iron.
She swallowed, forcing her gaze to lift. And then the door slammed open.
Dorian Blackthorne stood framed in the doorway, silhouette dagger-stark against the weak light spilling in from the street. His eyes were flames—everything Kara wanted to push away but couldn’t. The edge in them told her this wasn’t just a visit; it was a declaration.
“You think you’re safe here? Inside these walls?” His voice was silk wrapped around a blade, smooth but lethal. “Your influence—your power—it’s fracturing the pack. And I’m not the one tearing us apart.”
The hallway twisted with the echo of his words, sharp as broken glass. Kara’s fingers trembled, but she forced herself to stand taller. Every muscle coiled, ready to defend what she was—what she had become.
Behind her, footsteps broke the tense stillness.
“Dorian.” Kurt’s voice barked—a low growl thick with warning. The Alpha appeared, stepping forward, broad and fierce, blocking the threshold like an immovable wall. “Leave, before you make this worse than it already is.”
Dorian smiled, a cold split that didn’t reach his eyes. “You don’t get it, do you? She’s the fracture in your pack. The future you’re clinging to. But the past…” He ran a finger along the frame of the door, slow, deliberate. “The past always comes hunting.”
Suddenly the lights flickered, plunging the room into an uneasy half-shadow. The murmurs from outside grew louder, restless—fractured murmuring like the first rumbles of a storm breaking open.
Kara’s muscles tensed as the space shrank, invisible cracks forming between the faces that should have been allies. Eyes darted toward her, measuring, doubting, icy suspicion thick enough to choke on.
Liam’s voice cut through like a warning shot. “She’s changing everything—and not everyone’s ready to follow.”
A tense silence swallowed the room for a heartbeat, then snapped as someone yanked abruptly at the curtain near the windows. The fabric tore back like a scream—and a shadow lunged forward.
The world shifted.
A sharp, searing pain sliced into Kara’s side. Burning hot, wild. She gasped, staggering back, fingers clawing at the place where heat bloomed beneath her skin—the sting of fang or blade—but the attacker was already swallowed by the crowd, the chaos exploding in a burst of shouted names and shattered glass.
“Attack!” Kurt bellowed, voice thunderous, instantly commanding order amidst the madness.
Kara’s head spun, every breath a ragged slash against tightening ribs. Around her, pack members surged like waves breaking on a rocky coast—some rushing to shield her, others scanning the shadows with hate-flared eyes. The fractures beneath the surface had cracked wide open.
Dorian’s cold laughter sliced through the roar. “End of the game, Kara. You’ll either break—or you’ll bleed.”
Her eyes locked with his across the turmoil, the weight of unspoken destinies tilting the air. But beneath the burning pain, beneath the chaos and whispered betrayals, something fierce flickered alive inside her. A spark refusing to die.
Everything was about to change.
And it was only just beginning.
