Chapter 6

Dorian Blackthorne Emerges

The city’s pulse throbbed beneath the cavern’s stone ribs, an undercurrent of restless life that seeped in as Kara stumbled out into the chilly night. Her lungs clawed for air, sharp and sparse, like she’d been submerged too long, the weight of revelations pressing down with crushing insistence. The streetlamp’s sickly glow flickered overhead, casting long shadows that stretched like reaching fingers, as if the darkness itself wanted to reclaim her.

A faint shuffle echoed behind her, but when she whipped around, the alley was empty—save for the gathering fog that curled between rust-streaked dumpsters. The chill wasn’t just from the autumn wind; it wrapped around her spine, cold and unrelenting. She wrapped her arms tighter across her chest, the tremor in her fingers refusing to still.

Every breath whispered the same doubt: How could her bloodline be more than a secret? More than a curse?

Two blocks away, in a penthouse that pierced the city skyline like a jagged spear, Dorian Blackthorne leaned against the floor-to-ceiling window, his sharp silhouette carved by neon reds and blues. His eyes, pale and cold as winter ice, tracked the labyrinthine streets below. The hum of traffic and distant sirens were mere background noise to the storm of thoughts swirling inside him.

“Troublesome,” he muttered, voice low, almost a growl.

Behind him, the sleek leather chair spun slowly as a figure emerged from shadows—a man with ruthless features, dressed in shadows and ambition.

“The Alpha’s pack is rattled,” the man reported. “They don’t know what’s hit them. But she—the heiress—is more volatile than anyone predicted.”

Dorian’s lips curved into a smile sharp enough to draw blood. “Kara Winters. Not just a pawn, but a catalyst.”

He pressed a finger to the glass, tracing the chaotic sprawl far beneath.

“The prophecy demanded her—fated mate, blood marked. But she lacks control. Her fear, her secrets... they’re the weak points.”

“Her darkest memories,” the man whispered. “We have the means to turn those into weapons.”

Dorian’s gaze darkened. “Good. Kurt Blackthorne’s reign ends in fire—and Kara’s pain will be the match.”

He turned, eyes gleaming with predatory intent.

“Prepare the arrangements. It’s time she remembered everything she tried to bury.”

The room dimmed as the city lights blinked and vanished momentarily. Outside, the wind carried whispers, but inside—inside—Dorian’s plan took cold, terrifying shape.

The shadow of his smile lingered long after he spoke.

“Once she’s broken, the pack crumbles. And the throne... will be mine.”

The chill of the night deepened, swallowing secrets and plotting betrayals—all threaded through the flames of a past that refused to stay silent.

A knock at the door sliced through the darkness.

Dorian’s knuckles tightened. “Come in.”

The door creaked open, leaving the last flicker of silence—and dread—hanging heavy like a guillotine’s blade.
