Chapter 5
The howl faded, leaving a hollow ache where hope had briefly flickered. Kara pressed her back against the jagged stone wall, the cold creeping through her thin jacket, seeping into her bones. Her breath came uneven, each inhale sharp and brittle, each exhale a trembling ghost in the oppressive silence.
Her fingers trembled as they traced the worn edges of the crumpled letter clenched tight in her hand—a map to her past, or a weapon cleverly disguised. The faint metallic scent of old blood and dust hung in the air, as if the cavern itself breathed the memories of forgotten battles.
Her mind reeled.
An ancient relic—an heirloom whispered about in shadowed gatherings and coded tales—was more than myth. It was hers. The last tangible tie to a bloodline erased from histories and hunted into silence. The bloodline of the legendary Alphas, rulers not just of flesh and bone but of fate itself.
The weight of that revelation hit her like a merciless tide, ripping through the fragile defiance she’d stitched over the years.
“Why me?” she muttered into the dark, voice rough, brittle as fractured glass.
A shifting echo jerked her head toward the cavern’s narrow exit. The faint scrape of boots—too deliberate for the wind, too stealthy for a wild animal.
Kara's heartbeat reversed, hammering against her ribs with desperate urgency. Her breath caught, sharp and shallow. The relic—the shining emblem tucked inside her leather satchel—was still nestled close against her side.
Still.
Until it wasn’t.
Before she could blink, a cold hand snatched the bag from her grasp. The world tilted, her feet scrambling for purchase on the unforgiving stone floor.
A voice, cold and low, sliced through the sting of panic.
“You don’t deserve it,” a man said, voice laced with dark promise and cruel satisfaction.
Kara snarled, lunging forward, but the shadows swallowed the figure before her fingers grazed flesh.
Her satchel thudded against the ground.
Empty.
A metallic glint reflected in a sliver of moonlight—a pendant dangling from the thief’s clenched fist.
Her heritage—slipped through her fingers like smoke.
“Who are you?” rage and betrayal warred in her voice.
Only silence answered.
The cavern seemed to close in, suffocating, echoing the shattering of years of secrets and the raw vulnerability of a destiny revealed too soon.
Outside, the night whispered promises—and threats—that the bloodline was no longer Kara’s alone to bear.
