Chapter 3
Kara’s breath came ragged, each inhale sharp and shallow, stabbing at her lungs like shattered glass. The chill of the night crept beneath her jacket, but it was nothing compared to the icy tremor spiraling through her veins. She pressed her palm to the wall—rough brick biting her fingers—searching for something solid, something real, to anchor her flailing mind.
The words echoed still, like a drumbeat behind her skull: “The bond chose you. I only claimed you.” A claim that wasn’t hers to refuse. A binding sealed without consent.
A metallic scent hung thick in the air, remnants of adrenaline and something sharper—fear, maybe. Or raw power, jagged and jagging against her ribs like a caged beast begging to be freed.
Her skin prickled, the little hairs standing on end as her senses dialed up. Somewhere in the distance, the city throbbed with its urban heartbeat—sirens wailing, the buzz of neon, distant horns muttering their impatience. But inside her, there was a different rhythm. An ancient pulse that throbbed beneath the thin skin of the present world—waiting.
Kara backed away from the wall, fingertips twitching, eyes scanning the shadows. Her gaze caught a twisted pattern in the cracked paint beside her—a faint, circular glyph that shimmered like a reflection in a pool. She blinked. Nothing.
But the weight of it pressed against her chest, heavier than the chill.
“Why me?” The question tasted bitter, cracked on her tongue. It wasn’t just a desire to understand—it was a battle cry from the depths of a heart bruised by past betrayals and whispered secrets.
The alleyway felt narrower now, closing in with each heartbeat. She swallowed hard, every nerve screaming warnings she dared not acknowledge.
Footsteps—soft, deliberate—echoed behind her.
“Kara.”
The voice was low, rough-edged, tethered to the night like smoke curling in the cold air. Her heart slammed against ribs, a wild drum of warning and something else. Recognition. Despite everything, there was a tether she could not sever.
Turning, she faced Kurt.
His eyes burned with a mixture of ferocity and something softer—pain, regret? The streetlights cast long shadows across his face, highlighting the sharp angles, the flicker of vulnerability beneath the Alpha’s hard exterior.
“You need to know,” he said, stepping closer. “About the prophecy. About why this bond exists. Why you were chosen.”
Her pulse stuttered. The weight of his gaze made the space between them crackle—not with anger, but with an unyielding truth neither could deny.
Kara shook her head, voice barely a whisper. “I don’t understand any of it."
Kurt’s jaw tightened. “It’s older than any of us. Older than the packs, older than the city. The prophecy—” His words faltered, shadows flickering in the depths of his eyes. “It ties your bloodline to ours. You’re not just a pawn, Kara. You’re the key.”
A cold shiver raced down her spine. The key? To what? Power? Salvation? Or destruction?
“Why keep this from me?” The accusation wasn’t sharp but heavy, weighted with every lonely year of silence.
“Because knowing would have put you in danger sooner.” Kurt’s voice dropped, a growl lurking beneath the restraint. “And because I wasn’t sure you were ready.”
She studied him, searching for cracks, for lies. Instead, she found only the raw edge of desperate hope.
“Ready for what?”
Before he could answer, a sudden flicker caught Kara’s eye—a faint glow rising along her forearm, searing warmth blossoming beneath the skin. She gasped, trembling fingers tracing the source.
The surface of her arm rippled, and then, as though scorched by an invisible flame, a symbol formed—ancient runes curling in dark crimson, vivid against pale flesh.
Pain lanced sharp and sudden, as if the marking itself was alive, twisting under her skin.
Kurt’s eyes widened, a flash of alarm breaking through his controlled demeanor.
“It’s begun,” he whispered, stepping forward, hands hesitating mid-air. “The mark of the Fated. You’re no longer just chosen—you’re bound.”
Kara’s breath caught, the alleyway tilting, the city sounds fading into a distant murmur. The symbol pulsed, a beating heart inked in fire across her skin.
Fear surged, but beneath it, something else stirred—a fierce, unfamiliar power rising in tandem with the pain.
“This changes everything,” Kurt said, voice strained like he was carrying the weight of worlds.
Kara’s eyes locked with his, demanding answers, forgiveness, and above all, the strength to face the unknown.
A sharp bang shattered the fragile silence—metal against concrete. Both flinched, turning toward the alley’s dark mouth.
Shadows twisted, and in the flickering streetlight, a figure emerged—silent, watching, waiting.
The prophecy had marked her. And now, so had the hunt.
