Chapter 2
The laughter cut through the night like a blade, sharp and cold, leaving Kara’s breath jagged, her skin prickling under the weight of unseen eyes. Somewhere deep in the dark, power lurked—unforgiving, immense. Her fingers curled into fists, nails biting into her palms as the last echoes faded, replaced by heavy silence, thick and suffocating.
“Show yourself,” she whispered again, voice raw but resolute. The words barely left her lips before the thud of heavy boots against cracked pavement shattered the stillness.
The man stepped forward—tall, broad-shouldered, the streetlight glinting off a chiseled jaw set like iron. His eyes—dark as a midnight forest, yet burning with an intensity that scorched her from where she stood—locked onto hers.
“I’m not here to play games, Kara,” his voice was low, gravelly with a restrained fire. “You’re mine.”
Every hair on her skin rose, the cold knot in her gut tightening. The city’s neon glare flickered in his eyes like distant stars caught in a storm. She’d heard the stories—rumors of the Alpha who ruled the urban wilds with fierce dominance, whose name alone could freeze blood.
But this moment was different. Closer. Personal.
“Kurt…” Her voice barely cracked amid the thunder pounding behind her ribs.
He closed the distance in one stride, the scent of pine and smoke—wild, primal—washing over her like a wave. His hands found her elbows, anchoring her to the cracked concrete where the shadows spilled like spilled ink around their feet.
“You’re not running anymore,” he said, and his breath brushed her temple—cool, intoxicating, a paradox of danger and comfort tangled together.
Her heart slammed against her chest, a caged animal desperate to escape.
“I don’t belong to you,” she spat, voice sharp as shattered glass. The words were a shield, a desperate barrier against what clawed beneath the surface—traitor feelings she refused to name.
Kurt’s eyes darkened, but the torment behind them was a fissure beneath his relentless claim. “You don’t understand what this is. What you are.”
His grip tightened, but it was no cruelty. It was possession tethered to desperation, an ancient force dripping from every measured breath.
“You’re marked by something older. A bond … not chosen, but inevitable.”
She struggled, twisting under his grasp, breath ragged and uneven, but his hold was iron. Her body screamed for distance even as a strange, searing heat flared along her spine.
“No,” she gasped. “I won’t let you—”
“Let me what? Own you? Protect you? Save you?” His voice broke slightly, ragged edges slipping through the Alpha’s mask.
A tremor flickered in his eyes—not weakness. Something far deeper: pain, guilt, need.
Kara’s resolve wavered as a sudden, savage ache clawed at her chest. His gaze didn’t demand obedience. It begged for recognition—a haunted plea sent across time and fate.
She tore away, stumbling back into the darkness, heart thunderous and raw.
But even as she fled, his words followed, dark and relentless.
“The bond chose you. I only claimed you.”
Behind her, the night swallowed the fading echo of his voice. And somewhere, beneath the surface of their collision, a secret war raged—a war neither was ready to win.
