Chapter 16
The night air hung heavy with the scent of pine and damp earth, wrapping the forest in a cold shroud. Kara’s breath came in quick, shallow bursts as if each inhale scraped against the raw edges of the fear knotting deep inside her chest. The memory of shattered glass echoed in the hollow space between them—a cracked veneer, now irreparably broken.
Kurt stood close, the heat radiating from his broad frame nearly a balm against the chill clawing at her skin. His dark eyes, like twin pools of molten shadow, searched hers with a vulnerability neither had dared to voice before. The forest around them fell silent, as if the world was holding its breath.
"I never wanted you to see me like that," Kurt murmured, his voice rough, stripped bare. His fingers twitched, brushing a loose strand of hair away from her forehead, though he didn’t quite close the distance.
Kara swallowed hard, the tremble threatening escape in her fingers. “Neither did I,” she confessed, voice barely above a whisper. The fragile veil she'd worn all their lives—the armor, the silence—seemed to crumble beneath his gaze.
His jaw clenched like he was battling a storm within. “You keep everything locked away, Kara. Like you’re protecting me, but maybe it’s yourself you’re scared to lose.”
“Maybe.” The word felt like ash on her tongue. “I was supposed to be the strong one. The hidden heiress. The one who never breaks.”
Kurt’s gaze darkened, an ache flickering in the depths. “You’re not alone in that.”
A pause stretched between them, the forest shifting with rustling leaves and the distant call of an owl. The cold seeped deeper into Kara’s bones, but this time, Kurt’s steady presence was an anchor.
“I’m scared,” she breathed out, the admission raw and trembling as it spilled free for the first time. “Scared that anyone finding out will destroy everything I’ve fought to keep safe… scared that the power in me will just rip us apart."
Kurt stepped closer until the icy touch of his breath brushed her cheek. “You’re not a weapon, Kara. You’re more than what they want you to be. You’re… you. And I’m here.”
His fingers curved gently to cradle her face, rough callouses a stark contrast against her smooth skin. The intensity in his eyes was both warning and promise—fragile yet fierce.
They stood there, two lost souls tethered by fate’s cruel hand yet unwilling to let go. The moon sliced silver light through the dense canopy above, casting fragmented shadows that danced across their skin like silent witnesses.
Kara hesitated, then reached for him—a desperate tether to hold onto some semblance of safety. Her fingers tangled in the coarse fabric of his shirt, anchoring herself to something real. “I don’t know if I’m strong enough.”
Kurt’s lips curved into a faint, almost sad smile. “Strength doesn’t mean not breaking. It means standing back up after you do.”
Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, each beat syncing with the primal rhythm in his steady cadence. For a moment, the world outside ceased—no packs, no enemies, no prophecy—only the fragile heartbeat of two souls laid bare beneath the indifferent moonlight.
But then—
Something moved in the shadows beyond the trees. A mere flicker of movement, subtle as a breath but charged with cold intent.
Kara’s instincts screamed to pull back, but her gaze was caught in Kurt’s—raw, unresolved, and suddenly more vulnerable than ever.
A figure cloaked in darkness watched them from the treeline, eyes glinting with a cruel, calculating hunger. The promise of exploitation—the twisted opportunity born from their revealed weakness—throbbed heavy in the air.
The silence shattered like glass.
“Kara,” Kurt whispered, his voice low but urgent.
The figure stepped forward, lips curled into a smile edged with menace.
“Enjoying the moonlight, darling? It’s a shame you don’t know how long it’ll last.”
