Chapter 15

Chains of Destiny

The wolf pack’s camp lay silent beneath a bruised twilight sky, the air thick with a tension that clawed beneath skin and fur alike. Kara’s breath hitched, dust motes swirling in the streaks of fading orange light filtering through the skeletal canopy. Somewhere deep in the shadows, unseen eyes watched—the weight of their gazes a living thing, coiling tighter around her chest.

Her fingers trembled against the rough bark she leaned on, knuckles white. The secret—Alpha Kurt’s bloodline, his hidden burdens—had slipped past the lock of silence, loose and raw between them all. The fragile unity she’d clung to like a lifeline frayed in an instant, threads fraying in the cold.

A low growl unfurled in her gut, primal and uncertain. The power thrumming beneath her skin—a pulse surging like wildfire beneath frozen earth—stirred restlessly, whispering promises and warnings tangled in shadows. The prophecy was no longer just a tale whispered in the safety of closed doors; it was alive. And it was hungry.

Kara’s footsteps, light and deliberate, carried her past the restless murmurs of the pack. Around the fire, flickers of sour glances and silent accusations danced—lines drawn in sweat and blood, visible only to those who knew where to look.

“Why keep the truth from us?” The question hit like a jagged blade, slicing into the quiet between splintered logs.

Kara stiffened but didn’t turn. The voice belonged to Mikael—Kurt’s second and a man shadowed by doubts deeper than the night itself. His words carried the heavy weight of betrayal masked by concern, simmering resentment curling at the edges.

“The prophecy isn’t just about power, Mikael,” Kara said, voice low, steady—but beneath it, a tremor betrayed the storm raging inside. “It’s a curse. If we don’t learn to control it... it will destroy everything we’ve fought for.”

A ripple moved through the pack, unease prickling every furred nape and calloused hand. Kurt’s name hung unspoken, a ghost balancing between reverence and fear.

Behind her, a rustle of leaves cut sharp. Kara’s body tensed—a reflex sharpened by months of danger lurking in every shadow. Turning, she met eyes glittering with something darker than curiosity.

They belonged to Lysa and Joran—a pair known for their whispers, for bending packs to their will with half-truths and veiled threats. Their silence was their weapon; their presence, an unyielding pressure.

“We’ve been patient,” Lysa’s voice slipped from the dark like silk laced with venom. “But the pack needs more than secrets sewn in silence. We need a leader who embraces the prophecy, not hides beneath it.”

Joran stepped closer, the flamelight catching the hard lines of his jaw. “Kurt’s weakness is our chance. And you, Kara, you’re the key. The heir. The power bearer.”

Kara’s pulse hammered in her ears as a flicker of cold realization wound through her veins. They weren’t just restless—they were moving. Claiming. Hunting.

“Claiming?” Her voice cracked, sharp as breaking ice.

Joran smiled—a thin, cruel twist that didn’t reach his eyes. “Your bloodline ties you to the prophecy, and the prophecy ties you to us—all of us who’ll shape the pack’s fate. We won’t let you waste that power hiding behind Kurt’s legacy.”

Mikael’s shadowed face flickered with indecision. Kara searched his gaze, hoping for an ally, but found only the ghost of a man torn between loyalty and ambition.

They closed the distance in seconds—words sharp as claws, silencing the camp like a storm breaking a dried forest.

Kara’s breath caught as the air shifted, thickening with the weight of unspoken threats and promises carving deep lines into her resolve.

A hand brushed her arm—light, but firm enough to ground her wavering heart.

“Don’t trust them,” Kurt’s gravelly voice came from the dark, raw and urgent. “They want to break us apart, to use your power like a weapon.”

Relief and fear tangled, sparking a flare of hope and dread deep in Kara’s chest.

Before she could respond, a sudden crack shattered the stillness—branches snapping sharply behind the fire’s glow.

Every eye snapped toward the sound.

From the underbrush stepped a figure no one expected.

Dorian Blackthorne.

His smirk cut through the night like a serrated blade.

“Looking for me?” His voice sliced through the camp, cold and smooth, carrying the weight of a nightmare come true.

Kara’s pulse slammed against her ribs as the pack’s fragile balance shattered like glass beneath his footsteps.

The power hidden within her—and the chains binding destiny—tightened with a cruel, unyielding grip.

Tonight, nothing would remain the same.

Not the pack.

Not Kara.

Not the fate they all thought they could control.
