Chapter 13

Bonds Tested

The wind wasn’t just a whisper anymore. It fisted its fingers through the moss-draped branches, tugging at Kara’s hair and gnawing at the thin fabric of her jacket.

Her fingers curled tighter around the amulet, every heartbeat thudding like war drums beneath her ribs.

The clearing, once still and solemn, now thrummed with a portent she could taste on her tongue—bitter smoke, cold iron, and something darker, like the promise of blood.

She barely noticed Kurt’s heavy breaths beside her, ragged but steady. Until the snap of a twig—sharp, urgent—snapped her eyes toward the shadows hugging the treeline.

“They’re here,” Kurt’s voice dropped low, a growl in the dark.

Kara swallowed the tightening lump in her throat. This was no longer about hiding or running. It was war.

Movement flickered—too fast for the eye but every muscle in Kara’s body screamed to catch it. Figures stretched into view: Dorian’s wolves, their snarling faces fragments of shadow slashing through moonlight.

Instinct ignited fire through Kara’s veins. She dropped low, unholstering the dagger at her hip, fingers slick with sweat despite the chill.

Kurt shifted beside her, the ground trembling beneath his heavy steps as he drew his own weapon—a brutal, curved blade gleaming with an unnatural sheen.

The two of them, back to back, the sacred amulet pulsing against Kara’s chest like a heartbeat entwined with her own.

The first wolf lunged—a blur of muscle and fury, teeth bared. Kara spun, blade slicing the air just as claws ripped through her sleeve.

Pain flared, red and hot as blood kissed her skin, but she forced herself forward, slashing deep into the attacker’s flank.

A growl, sharp and desperate, echoed as the wolf staggered and retreated, but more snarled from the darkness, crowding in.

Kurt stepped forward, met an assailant with a brutal thrust that sent the creature crashing into the dirt. His eyes—hard, wild—never left Kara. A silent question: Are you with me?

Her answer was a breathless nod.

They fought as one—Kurt’s savage strength carving a path through enemies, Kara’s swift precision weaving between strikes. But the night wasn’t theirs to tame.

A crashing thud behind her spun Kara’s world. Dorian, raven-haired and lethal, emerged like a storm breaking the edges of the clearing.

“Give me the amulet, Kara,” he snarled, eyes swimming with cruel hunger. “You’re more valuable as a pawn than a queen.”

Kara’s grip tightened until her fingers ached. “I’ll never give it to you.”

His smirk deepened, dark pleasure curling in the smile. “Then you leave me no choice.”

He lunged—quick, brutal.

A crash of steel, a flare of pain, and Kara cried out as Kurt flew between them, a blade finding flesh meant for her.

His body stilled as all light drained from his eyes.

Kara stumbled forward, panic crashing through her veins like wildfire.

“Kurt!” Her voice cracked, raw and desperate.

He crumpled, weight heavy and broken in her arms, the amulet pressed cold and glaring against her chest.

The forest held its breath.

And Kara faced a cruel, shattering decision: to fight and risk losing the only man she had—and the future tethered to him—or surrender the power she was born to protect.

Her fingers trembling, she looked up into the dark swirl of Dorian’s eyes.

The war had come for her. There was no turning back.

Only choices carved in blood.

The night swallowed her scream.
