Chapter 12

The Whispering Woods

Kara’s lungs burned with each ragged breath, the copper tang of blood sharp on her tongue. Around her, the fractured silence trembled like a held breath—too thick, too still. The scent of singed earth and wet pine clung to the undergrowth, shadows knotting like snakes between broken branches.

Her fingers trembled as she pressed them to the gash across her forearm, the sting reminding her she was still flesh, still bleedable. The forest was ceaseless—the tired rustle of leaves underfoot, a distant crack of wood snapping, the almost imperceptible drip of sap oozing in the twilight.

She swallowed a shudder as the echoes of what had just unfolded clawed at her mind. “Traitor’s bite cuts deepest.” Dorian’s words weren’t just venom; they were a brand scorching her skin, poisoning the fragile armor of trust she’d built around herself.

But there was no time to dwell. The war born this night wasn’t waiting for her heart to mend.

Kara’s boots crushed the brittle carpet of autumn leaves, the way forward a labyrinth of gnarled roots and ancient trees. The city’s neon haze had been swallowed the moment she crossed the tree line, replaced by a heavy cloak of twilight and cold whispers.

Each step was a prayer she was following the right path—the one rumored to cleave the riddle of the prophecy in two.

A fog curled low, swallowing her calves, sending shivers skittering down her spine. The tales spoke of elder seers who lived deep within these woods, timeless watchers of the bloodline’s ebb and flow. To deny their power, a mistake. To seek their counsel, a desperate gamble.

The scent of moss and damp bark was suddenly pierced by a sharp, almost metallic tang, like old iron beneath loam. Kara’s hand tightened around the amulet nestled beneath her shirt, the heirloom pulsing faintly—a heartbeat tethered to a secret she wasn’t sure she wanted to unveil.

Branches scraped against her jacket, their skeletal fingers seeming to leer with silent threats or warnings. Her heart synchronized with the distant howl—lonely, aching, the cry of a beast bound too tightly by chains of blood and prophecy.

Then, abruptly, the undergrowth opened.

A clearing, ringed by towering oaks whose twisted limbs wove overhead into a cathedral of shadows. At its center, an ancient stone altar, mottled with moss and time, sprawled beneath a canopy perforated by shards of moonlight.

There, waiting in the half-light, stood the seer.

Her eyes, crystalline pools of midnight, fixed on Kara with an unsettling stillness. Her hair, streaked with silver and black, cascaded wild down a weathered cloak. The air around her trembled with unspoken power, like a held storm, dangerous and inevitable.

“You carry more than wounds, child,” the seer’s voice was a rasp, a whisper caught in dry leaves. “The weight of what’s to come drags at your soul.”

Kara stepped forward, swallowing the swell of doubt. “I need to understand. The prophecy… it’s more than just the words spoken. It’s a knife twisting in the dark, and I don’t know which side will bleed.”

A crooked smile ghosted the seer’s lips. “Ah, the truth you crave is buried where light fears to tread.”

The air tightened, pressing against Kara like the slow ink of water filling lungs. The seer’s gaze sharpened, carving space in the chilling dusk.

“The prophecy’s meaning is darker than you’ve been told. Beyond power and bond, lies a secret that could rend your world—and the worlds that bleed alongside it.”

Kara’s breath hitched, the forest seemingly closing in. A tempest of dread and resolve churned inside her.

“What…?”

But before the seer could answer, a sudden crack shattered the air—a sharp, snapping echo that sent birds bursting skyward in a frantic scatter.

The seer’s eyes widened, lips parting as if to warn, to command, to curse.

Kara’s heart slammed against ribs like a trapped wolf. The woods moved—a menace unseen yet palpable—its voice a growl in the distance that promised both ruin and revelation.

“Be ready,” the seer murmured, stepping back into shadow. “The balance tips. And when it does, no mark will hide from the truth.”

Kara’s fingers curled tighter around the amulet as the first whispers of a haunting wind stirred the clearing, threading secrets through the branches.

The war was no longer a distant roar. It was at her doorstep.

And the darkest part of the prophecy was just waking.
