Chapter 1

Shadows of the Urban Wild

The cold bit at Kara Winters’ skin like a thousand restless needles, each breath she dragged through clenched teeth burning her lungs like black ice. Midnight clung thickly to the city—slick streets glimmering under jaundiced streetlights, alleys yawning open like gaping wounds. Somewhere in the distance, a siren wailed, raw and desperate, twisting around the lamplight’s sickly halo.

Kara’s boots pounded unevenly as she sprinted, heart hammering a savage rhythm beneath her ribs. The knot in her stomach tightened, a familiar pulse rippling through—her wolf's warning, sharp and insistent. She darted past rusted dumpsters that smelled of rot and spilled secrets, her breath hitching in the frosted air. Her fingers trembled—cold, yes—but also something else: the sting of terror lacing her blood.

Behind her, silence swallowed her footsteps. Too quiet.

She forced her lungs to fill again and pushed her muscles harder, legs aching, lungs screaming for mercy. The city was a beast tonight, teeth bared in shadow, and she was just a faint, fragile prey glimpsed in the ruined light.

Kara’s gaze flicked upward toward the jagged skyline, the glass towers stabbing at the bruised sky like colossal claws. Somewhere beyond this concrete wilderness, secret worlds collided—silent battles writ in ancient tongues and blood whispered only to those who dared listen.

She ducked sharply into a narrow passageway, heart pounding so loud she feared anyone nearby could hear the ragged thunder of her survival. The buzz of neon signs flickered above, casting sickly blue ghosts that danced mocking laughter across graffiti-scarred walls.

Stillness pressed down like wet cement until Kara’s senses carved a razor-thin edge through the shroud.

There: a flicker from the corner of her vision, too deliberate to be wind or shadow play.

A breath.

Slow. Heavy.

Not hers.

Every instinct screamed: Someone watched. Waited. Stalked.

Her body froze, muscles coiled tighter than steel springs. The icy grip in her chest wasn’t just fear—it was ancient, primal terror, the weight of secrets not hers alone, secrets buried beneath layers of lies and bloodlines that clawed desperately toward the surface.

She swallowed hard, swallowed the ragged pull of raw emotion gathering behind her ribs. Kara’s voice was a low hiss, barely audible over the pounding drum of her heartbeat.

“Show yourself.”

The night answered only with silence.

Her breath hitched again—an uneven cadence breaking the muted rhythm of her escape—and, just beneath her skin, the wolf stirred with a hunger that was not hunger but warning: Be careful who watches you when darkness turns to prey.

A shadow lengthened, sliding between fractured pools of light. It moved with a cold, deliberate grace, the weight of power and menace pressing its invisible talons into the threadbare edges of her awareness.

Kara’s fingers curled into fists at her sides. The city was unforgiving, the wilderness behind her no less so. Here, in this chasm between savage past and fractured modernity, survival demanded ferocity—not just of body, but soul and spirit.

Because she was more than just the hunted tonight.

Behind her, silence shifted into something darker.

Someone was coming.

And they weren’t just any shadow in the urban wild.

The breath she smelled now was colder than the chilled night air, laced with something ancient—danger, power, and a promise that Kara Winters was no longer alone.

“Show yourself,” she whispered again, fury igniting beneath every inch of skin.

From the darkness, a slow, predatory chuckle—the sound of power cloaked in shadows—drifted toward her, sharp and low.

The chase had only just begun.
