Shattered Sanity

The knocks hammered into Jaylen’s chest like a tribal warning, each echo scraping raw nerves he thought had long fibbed to numbness. The sterile clang against the steel—slow, deliberate—screeched beneath the muted drone of that fractured world humming just outside the door. His palms slick, clutching the Tempus Beacon that pulsed wildly, throbbing with a light that didn’t just illuminate shadows—it carved them into something alive.

He swallowed. His throat felt tight, a dry, collapsing tunnel leading nowhere. The cold air caught in his lungs, sharp and biting.

Then silence.

Nothing filled the space but the acidic hum vibrating from the compact device clasped in his fist. His fingers trembled as he shifted the glow, and the walls seemed to bend, contracting then swelling like lungs, distorted by trembling vision or something far worse—a fracture in himself. The smashed fragments of time, converging.

Movement flickered in the corner of his eye.

Jaylen spun. The hallway was a maze of warped neon and steel, smeared with flickering light like a city breathing unevenly. An odor of burnt ozone and something older—decay and iron, maybe—tainted the air. The familiar was slipping, dissolving into something alien, nightmarish.

His heart kicked up a frantic rhythm. Somewhere behind him, the door’s heavy metal groaned; the lock snarled, resisting.

“No,” he whispered, swallowing again, the word a sputter that made no sense in the stillness.

Then came the whisper.

A voice so low and cold, like frostbite against bone. Not his own, but—

“Jaylen.”

He whipped toward the disintegrating light where the scream of the city bent into darkness. The voice hovered, then fragmented into static—a broken recording warped by interference.

Shadows melted into shapes.

And there, barely visible beneath layers of glitching reality and sinew-thin light, stood a figure.

His figure.

Jaylen’s breath caught in a snap-crackle, lungs burning under the weight of impossibility. The figure tilted its head, eyes glowing with a saturated crimson—empty of his empathy, fired with malice. A predator wearing his face.

“Who the hell—?” Jaylen’s voice cracked.

The doppelgänger inched forward, claws scraping a slow, grinding sound on the concrete floor. But its smile—a cruel, peeling twist—held a promise that froze Jaylen colder than the lurking city's neon chill.

“Lost something, brother?” the shadow hissed, voice like knives sliding through glass.

Jaylen’s grip on the Tempus Beacon tightened until the knuckles blanched.

“Back off.”

The duplicate laughed—a harsh, broken grate slicing the silence. “There’s no backing off. You’re already gone, lost in the loop just like me.”

A dizzying cascade of images crashed behind Jaylen’s eyelids: slashing time fractures, screams bleeding in reversed echoes, his sister’s voice fading, warping memories of days shredded beyond repair.

His mind spiraled. Something inside snapped—a fractal crack widening—tearing sanity thin.

“Why are you here?” Jaylen demanded, voice hoarse, barely more than a ripple on the tearing air.

The shadow’s eyes flickered with malevolent delight. “To remind you. You’re not him anymore. You’re not even you.”

“The Chronarch... he’s—”

The figure interrupted with a sharp smile. “The Chronarch is just a ghost story. Like your sister. Like your hope. You’re trapped, Jaylen. Forever caught between endings.”

The walls rippled, colors bleeding into chaos, the floor folding like paper beneath his boots. Time itself buckled, twisted by something organic and monstrous—a nightmare birthed from his fractured memories.

Jaylen staggered; his hand shot out and slammed against the wall. The pulse in his palm burned hotter than before, almost unbearable.

The shadow stepped closer. The space between them warped, their reflections swallowed by the maelstrom.

Jaylen’s jaw clenched, breath rattling in his chest. “No. I’ll fix this. I will.”

“Fix what?” the shadow sneered. “You’re the disease now.”

Then—

A piercing crack split the air. The Beacon flared incandescent, a vortex of temporal energy spiraling wildly around them.

Jaylen’s vision blurred, the rift opening wider behind the shadow—cracks of reality bleeding multiverses across the corridor.

His heart slammed into a frenzy as the duplicate reached into the rift, claws stretching like dark lightning.

Time was fracturing.

He couldn’t tell which version of himself was the hunter—or the prey.

And beneath that chaos, a cold certainty flickered: the game had just become lethal.

Then the shadow turned its glowing eyes directly on him, voice sealing the nightmare.

“See you in the next loop.”

Jaylen’s breath caught—

Knock knock knock.

The rift pulsed.

And the chapter tore to black.
