Chapter 16

Temporal Crossfire

Jaylen’s ribs ached with every breath, lungs clawing for air that tasted like rust and static. Dawn stretched its pale fingers into the sky, but the world outside the cracked window no longer felt real—fractures rippled through the skyline like fractured glass, shards of time twisting and contorting the city into impossible angles. Neon signs flickered erratically, the glow bleeding and warping, while distant sirens layered over themselves with dissonant echoes, as if two radios jammed on the same wretched frequency.

He barely registered the cold sweat slicking his back, the tremor gripping his fingers as he pressed his palm to the scar that ruled the back of his neck—the faint hum of temporal energy coursing beneath his skin. The loop was more than threatening now. It was unraveling.

Then—

A voice, sharp and desperate, sliced through the haze.

“Jaylen.”

He jerked around, eyes snapping wide. The figure stepping from the shadows was a perfect match—same cropped hair, the same haunted eyes—but the shimmer of distortion that wreathed him marked him as an alternate.

“Godsdamn it,” the other Jaylen spat, voice ragged like gravel grinding against stone. “You don’t know what you’re messing with.”

Jaylen tensed. “Neither do you.”

The two men circled, an eerie reflection warped by desperation. Around them, the air crackled, the faint sensation of static thickening as reality trembled beneath their feet. Floating fragments of scenes—half-seen moments from fractured timelines—flickered and collapsed in on themselves like busted holo-screens.

“Every step you take tears the fabric further,” the alternate said, voice low, urgent. “I’m trying to fix this. To stabilize the loop before it ends reality for good.”

Jaylen’s jaw tensed. “I’m trying to rescue my sister. Not save your broken chronology.”

The other smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “She’s the key. And if we lose her...”

Before Jaylen could answer, a sudden blast detonated nearby, glass shattering in violent sprays. Both men dove behind an overturned console as a bullet lobbed between them, sparking against metal with a searing hiss. The air felt charged, thick with temporal residue tearing at the edges of everything.

“You brought them,” the alternate growled, eyes narrowing. “Your friends? Or are you alone in this—like me?”

Jaylen’s heart hammered, every nerve screaming.

From the hallway, footsteps pounded—two sets, maybe three—followed by a brutal mechanical hiss. A spectral edge of distortion carved the dim corridor’s neon glow into slices. The Chronarch’s agents were close, hunting the fractures realigning around Jaylen’s makeshift fortress.

He glanced at the other Jaylen.

“You know this place better.”

“I’m trying to stop the Chronarch’s reach — before he wipes us all,” the alternate said, breath ragged. “But if you’re going to save her, I’ll help. Temporarily.”

Jaylen swallowed the rancid air.

“Temporary isn’t good enough,” he ground out.

The moment hung, brittle, alive with static.

The footsteps slammed into the room, the air igniting as temporal blurs surged ahead—two shadowy figures, bent and twisted by time’s corruption. Their eyes glowed hollow, faces flickering between distorted versions of themselves, an eerie mockery of humanity.

Jaylen rose first, fingers tightening around the pulse pistol’s grip. The alternate mirrored him, weapon drawn, twin shades of the same desperation ready for collision.

The agents lunged.

Gunshots cracked sharp and sudden, puncturing the thick tension.

Jaylen ducked a crackling lob of energy as it brushed past his cheek, hair singeing with the heat. The world seemed to warp sideways—beats out of sync, colors bending and unraveling at the edges of senses. He fired back, a beam of concentrated light shredding the nearest agent’s temporal distortion into raw sparks.

“Cover me!” the alternate shouted, vaulting over the console to take a flanking position.

Jaylen’s mind shattered into moments—an endless cascade of fractured possibilities. Each breath rippled with the weight of infinite loops overlapping, each decision echoing across tangled webs of cause and effect.

His pistol recoiled in his fist as another blast tore across the room, throwing him backward into the cold concrete floor. Pain bloomed in his side—a flare of fire rippling through fractured bone. He grimaced, scrambling to his feet.

The alternate Jaylen grunted, taking a hit to the shoulder but pressing forward, firing precise bursts that sent the assailants staggering back.

An explosion tore through behind them, throwing a hot wave of debris and plaster. The world around them oscillated violently, chunks of reality folding and unfolding—buildings flickering in and out of existence outside the shattered window.

Through the chaos, a third figure materialized at the threshold: another Jaylen. Younger, with a haunted, almost pleading expression, eyes swarming with confusion and pain.

Jaylen’s breath caught.

“This isn’t you,” the original snapped, stepping forward.

The young version shook his head frantically. “You don’t understand. I’m trying to fix things—stop the Chronarch before he breaks everything.”

The room trembled violently, temporal rifts snaking like poisonous vines across the cracked floor.

“Stop!” the alternate said, hand raised. “We can’t let this loop collapse—trust me, we’re on the same side.”

Jaylen’s head spun. Three versions of him, each scarred by time and trauma, pulling in different directions. Shadows lengthened, stretching the fractured minutes into an unbearable weight.

The youngest Jaylen collapsed against the wall, breathing ragged.

“The loop is unraveling,” he whispered, voice cracking. “My choices... your choices... it’s tearing us apart. The Chronarch’s manipulations are worse than any of us thought.”

“Then we end the loop,” Jaylen said, voice low and cold. “No more tinkering. We save her. Or we lose everything.”

The alternate turned sharp eyes on him. “And you trust me... after everything?”

“No,” Jaylen said evenly. “But I trust your desperation.”

A soft pop crackled in the air—a shard of the room splitting into impossible angles.

Time fractured again.

The youngest Jaylen reached out, trembling fingers brushing the scar at the back of Jaylen’s neck.

“Choose,” he whispered. “Which ally do you trust? Because the loop is breaking, and so are we.”

Jaylen’s pulse thundered in his ears as the world wobbled.

His eyes flicked between the two men—shadows of himself locked in a tangled war of desperation, hope, and buried fear.

And the walls around them started to bleed fractured echoes of seconds that hadn’t happened yet.

The loop was more than breaking. It was about to explode.

His fingers tightened around the pulse pistol.

The time to choose—a knife-edge decision—had come.

Jaylen inhaled the electric charge of collapsing seconds.

And the world waited.
