Chapter 15

Hostile Alliance

The air snapped taut around Jaylen’s throat, brittle as ice scraping steel. He blinked, heart thudding a frantic tattoo against ribs that strained to cage it. The emptiness behind him gaped like a wound—silent, but bleeding reality itself.

His fingers twitched toward the rip, fingers poised in reflex to touch the frayed edges of space. But the fabric of the city hummed a muted warning, and the neon lights flickered overhead with static—an ultraviolet warning pulse against tampering.

Jaylen sucked in a breath, lungs scraping raw. The world was unbalanced, tense as a wire pulled to breaking.

Then—

A voice. His voice.

A razor-sharp echo slicing through the cold, distorted air.

“Staying cautious, I see.”

Jaylen whirled toward the alley’s end—where shadow wrestled shadow beneath a flickering sign advertising long-dead smiles.

Two figures stood there, mirrored in posture, motion, and grim resolve.

The other Jaylen’s eyes glittered with a brutal calculation, blue ice switching to molten steel with terrifying ease.

“Who the hell—?” Jaylen swallowed. “You’re me.”

“Depends on which me you want. I’m the version who’s done running in circles. Sick of the goddamn loops.”

Every movement—the tilt of his head, the hardening of his jaw—was a terrifying reflection, only sharper, darker, the edges honed with survival instinct that Jaylen recognized as his own but twisted beyond recognition.

“We don’t have time for this,” Jaylen barked, fists clenched into fists that trembled from adrenaline or something deeper.

“Sure we do.” The other smiled—cold, sardonic. “You want your sister back, right?”

Jaylen stilled, heart staccato. “What do you mean?”

The second Jaylen stepped forward. “I know the Chronarch’s game. I’ve lived more cycles than you can count. I’ve learned the cracks. And there’s a way out.”

Jaylen’s brow furrowed, skepticism folding like metal around an iron core. “We both know the Chronarch will kill whoever tries to break the loop.”

“That’s why I brought backup.” The other reached into his worn jacket and pulled a tattered notebook, open to scribbled notes, fractal diagrams of timelines spooling like tangled wires.

Jaylen’s fingers brushed the edge.

“Let me spell it out,” the dark Jaylen said, voice low, hungry. “We team up, pool our knowledge. Two versions, twice the odds. I want to save her, too. But not just her—the whole city. The entire loop’s rotten. If we don’t break it now, we’ll be stuck forever. Or worse.”

His eyes burned with exhausted rage.

Jaylen’s breath caught. A hostile echo from his own mouth, but desperate enough to listen.

“How can I know this isn’t another trap?”

The other Jaylen shrugged, lips twitching.

“Because if I wanted to hurt you, you wouldn’t be standing here.”

The words settled, thick and bitter.

Jaylen weighed the flickering moment. Seconds that might tilt fate on a razor’s edge.

“Alright,” Jaylen finally said, voice brittle but firm. “We talk. But one slip—I end it. There’s no second chance.”

A sneer tugged the corner of the dark Jaylen’s lips.

“Fair enough.”

They ducked beneath the flicker of failing neon into a narrow doorway hidden behind broken crates and the hum of forgotten machines.

Inside, shadows breathed thick as oil, illuminated by a single swaying bulb that cast gritted halos on peeling brick.

“Here’s what I’ve pieced together,” dark Jaylen said, flipping pages in the notebook. “The Chronarch controls the loop with temporal relays scattered across the city. Shut those down, and you chip the timeline at its core. Then—maybe—you break the cycle.”

Jaylen ran a hand over the pages, digesting maps littered with glowing dots and threads binding moments like spider silk.

“You’ve been hunting these relays this whole time?”

“Every cycle. Every day resetting. I’ve gotten close—but never close enough. The last relay is in the core of the Chronarch’s domain.”

Jaylen’s throat clenched. “I’ve seen that place. Near the Temporal Nexus—the heart of the city.”

“Exactly. We need an inside shot.”

A shadow flickered behind the bulb’s weak glow.

Jaylen’s jaw clenched. “This plan sounds like a suicide run.”

The other’s eyes flashed fierce.

“Better a suicide run than an endless death loop.”

Then the sound cracked the fragile stillness—a low, metallic hum growing, twisting, roiling into a perfect crescendo of dread.

Outside the door, the night shifted.

Faint but unmistakable—the rhythmic cracking of heels against cracked pavement.

The hostile Jaylen’s shadow flickered.

“We move at dawn.”

Jaylen narrowed his eyes, senses screaming.

“Wait. Why are you so sure? What’s happened?”

A slow smile spread, hard and merciless.

“Because every time the dawn hits, the Chronarch strengthens the loop’s shield. We only get one shot—on the cusp of daybreak. That’s when the loop is weakest.”

And then, softer, darker—

“My plan?”

Jaylen’s blood tightened. “What plan?”

The darker reflection’s eyes shimmered, calculating with sinister calm.

“A plan to force the loop’s fracture by any means necessary.”

The distant click of a gun cocking echoed from the shadows behind them.

Jaylen’s spine hitched as he turned sharply—only to find the other Jaylen already moving, face hard as stone.

He barely caught the glint of cold steel aimed under his jaw.

A chill swept through the room, steel whispering promises of endings.

“This isn’t a partnership anymore,” the dark Jaylen hissed, voice a razor’s edge. “It’s survival. And the next move belongs to me.”

Jaylen’s lungs seized in a razor-sharp inhalation.

Outside, dawn’s pale bleeding light started to claw at the horizon.

And the loop threatened to break—or snap forever.
