Chapter 6

Pieces of a Puzzle

The echo of the door’s slam reverberated in Luna’s skull, a thunderclap between her ears. Her breath hung suspended—ragged gasps forced into the stale air. Darkness pressed against her skin, a damp and cold suffocating blanket, roping around her ribs, squeezing each breath thinner.

Her hands fumbled forward, fingers scraping the slick, unyielding masonry of the hidden chamber’s walls. The faintest shimmer of neon from the cracked doorway outside bled through the thin space beneath, casting jagged slices of cold light across the floor.

Time lost meaning. Each heartbeat thudded louder, wild drums in a cage racing toward collapse. Luna’s fingertips brushed against something metallic—hard edges lined with grime. A cold stab of recognition shot through her.

Memories flickered—fractured flashes like shattered glass splintering behind closed lids.

She knelt and traced the object. Folding it open revealed smudged photographs pinned beneath a brittle yellowing envelope. Her pulse pinned itself against her throat, trebled in fear and fragile hope.

Luna inhaled—sharp, trembling—her lungs fighting the stale gloom. Fingers trembling, she lifted the photographs. Each frame bore the unmistakable urban decay of their city: flickering streetlights dripping rain on littered sidewalks, stained walls scrawled with cryptic graffiti, and bodies—silent, broken, abandoned—faces twisted in frozen, final screams.

Her breath hitched. These were the victims, weren’t they?

A scrawled note, hastily scribbled, was tucked beneath the images in her own shaky handwriting:

“Investigate Corvin. Evidence in the warehouse. Trust no one. Must remember.”

The words burned with an urgency she’d lost but somehow remembered.

“Corvin...” she whispered, the name slipping out with a bitter edge. Malik Corvin—the shadow looming over her fractured memories like a black widow’s web woven tight, unyielding.

Fingers trembling, Luna unfurled the brittle envelope. Inside, a stack of typed documents spilled into the dim light—surveillance reports, witness statements, grainy security footage stills pinned to the edges in faded ink.

She skimmed the text, heart pounding louder with every chilling detail:

Murder victim #17 transported to safehouse. Suspicious contacts with suspected Corvin enforcers. Unsolved homicide cloaked in silence by local authorities.

Her hands shook as a sudden wave of nausea clawed her belly, threatening to overturn her fragile composure. She swallowed hard, blinking away sweat beads tracing rivulets down her temples.

Someone had been trying to dig this out before the memories vanished. Before she had vanished.

Suddenly, the frigid scrape of movement startled Luna’s spine. Her head snapped toward the door. Nothing but darkness stared back. The silence thickened, suffocating.

Her pulse hammered an erratic tattoo as a low, steady creaking slid through the gloom—shoes on cracked concrete, slow and deliberate, closing in.

Eyes wide, breath shallow, Luna crushed the papers beneath her palm, senses razor-sharp and unyielding. At the edge of the darkness, the faint tick of a lighter flicked ablaze—a small flame sputtered, revealing the silhouette of a figure leaning into the room.

“Luna,” a voice hissed—velvet-coated menace wrapped in threat.

Her skin prickled. The name on his lips was poison.

Malik.

“No more running,” he growled, the flame’s glow catching the unforgiving line of his jaw, the cruel glint in his cold eyes. He stepped forward, the door pocketing their shadows, the room shrinking into a noose.

Luna scrambled backward, clutching the crumpled evidence like a lifeline.

“What do you want?” she demanded, voice brittle but burning with a defiant fire she hadn’t felt in ages.

“To remind you,” Malik’s smile was a slash of cold steel, “that some memories are best left buried.”

The flame guttered, darkness surged. The air thickened, claustrophobic, as Luna pressed herself against the stone wall, every nerve screaming.

Behind her, the door locked with a resonant click.

No escape.

And somewhere inside, broken fragments whispered— a secret waiting to shatter the night.
