Chapter 15

Silent Witness

The sharp pressure lingered like icy steel pressed deep into Luna’s skin— a ghost of contact already gone, but the echo slashed through her veins. Her breath hitched, shallow and ragged, caught between fight and flight, eyes darting into the fractured pool of neon and shadow swirling before her.

“Not alone,” she whispered, voice barely a crack against the rain’s relentless chorus. Even as the city’s siren song clawed at her resolve, she stood frozen—heart a staccato drum.

The weight of a thousand unseen eyes pressed in—malice wrapped in velvet darkness. Luna’s fingers tightened on the cold metal of the fire escape railing beneath her, knuckles blanching white. The thin ratchet of distant footsteps echoed down the alley—a deliberate cadence, slow and unhurried, but bone-deep certain.

Her gaze snapped to the narrow passage ahead. Two figures emerged from the drumming rain: Malik Corvin and someone she hadn’t expected. A stranger. Tall. Broad-shouldered, with the hard lines of someone born in shadow.

Malik’s voice was a dry rasp, sharp enough to cut glass. “Time’s running out, Marek. That witness won’t hold forever.” Marek’s reply was a grunt, low and wary, his gaze constantly jumping the shadows beyond their circle.

Luna pressed back against the cold brick, stifling a shiver as the smell of wet asphalt and steel filled the air. Her pulse slammed in her ears—each beat an urgent tattoo drilling into the night’s thick fabric of silence.

“What do you mean, ‘won’t hold forever’?” Marek’s voice cracked, betraying the veneer of calm.

Malik’s smile was a thin slash of menace, eyes glittering under the streetlight’s sickly glow. “We take care of her. Quietly. Before she opens her mouth.”

Luna’s breath caught in her throat. Her mind stumbled over the words, trying to catch a fractured truth slipping like ice water down a cliff’s face.

The witness. The one who knew. The one who could name Luna as the lead investigator.

Her investigation. Her tangled memories. All converging on this one damn point.

“Luna’s gone too far this time,” Malik muttered, voice low, grim. “She needs erasing—before she drags the whole empire down.”

Marek shifted uneasily. “If we move too quick, we risk exposure. Someone’s watching. There’s talk around the docks.”

Malik’s gaze snapped to the wet pavement as if it might betray a secret in its slick surface. He growled low, “No loose ends. No second chances.”

The rain intensified, hammered down like hell breaking loose. Luna’s skin prickled as though the night itself conspired against her—trapping her in this unfolding nightmare.

From her hiding place, she pulled a trembling hand from beneath her coat— phone clenched tight, finger poised over the record button.

She had to get this, had to prove it. This was the thread—thin but unbreakable—that could unravel the lies strangling her past.

Every instinct screamed to retreat, vanish into the labyrinthine streets, but a deeper fire pushed her forward—fear laced with fierce determination.

Malik straightened, voice icier than frozen steel, “Make the call, Marek. Tonight. Before dawn dares to stir.”

Marek nodded grimly, voice now barely above a whisper, “Understood.”

Across the alley, the city’s neon bled into the shadows, casting blood-red fingerprints on the slick pavement.

Luna’s fingers tightened on the railing again, nails biting into flesh. The cold wasn’t just outside—it seeped into her bones, into the fragile fragment of herself she clung to.

She had to warn someone. Anyone.

But who?

Her throat tightened with the tightening noose of urgency and dread.

A sudden clatter—a trash can kicked over a few feet away—made Malik and Marek flinch, eyes scanning the dark.

Luna froze. The moment snapped so sharply it left her breath suspended in the chill night air.

She slipped silently into the maze of alleys, heartbeat shattering with every step.

Her phone vibrated—a text from an unknown number flashing again and again on the cracked screen:

They know. They’re coming.

Her breath hitched— and a shadow detached itself from the darkness ahead, stepping close enough for her to see the glint of a weapon.

Luna swallowed the scream choking in her throat as the world tilted on a razor’s edge.

The city whispered secrets in the rain’s ceaseless murmur. But tonight, beneath the neon and corrosion, the silent witness was her alone.

And the most dangerous truth had just been spoken.

Her pulse skidded dangerously.

Malik planned to erase the last link.

And the night was closing in.
