Chapter 13

Double Agent

The knock shattered the stale silence, splintering the tight coil within Luna’s chest. Her breath hitched—raw, ragged—like a fist squeezed the fragile ember of calm she’d barely conjured. She pressed back against the cold metal door, pulse pounding in her ears louder than the rain hammering the neon-lit street beyond.

A second rap—quicker, more insistent—shattered the tenuous boundary between her refuge and the world gnashing its teeth outside.

“Who is it?” Luna’s voice wavered. She tasted iron, thick and bitter on her tongue, the residue of fear and dread swirling low in her gut.

No answer.

Another knock. Then the faintest shuffle, the scrape of leather against concrete.

Her fingers clenched until her nails bit crescent moons into her palms. Dare she open it? Dare she meet the darkness face-to-face?

A hesitant voice stabbed through the howling storm.

“It’s me... It’s Cal.”

Luna’s head snapped toward the narrow gap under the door. Cal. Her closest ally, the only person who ever seemed to truly see the shadows behind her eyes—and still stayed.

The knowledge wasn’t a balm but a blade twisting in the slow bleed of uncertainty.

“Cal,” she breathed, trembling, voice fragmented like broken glass. “Why now? Why here?”

The lock clicked. The door creaked open, revealing his rain-drenched form framed in the face of neon bruises cast by flickering signs. His eyes—dark hollows haunted by sleepless nights—met hers with a tremulous mixture of guilt and resolve.

Cal stepped inside, shedding water like a soaked animal, his coat clinging to lean bones.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way,” he admitted, voice rough as gravel. “I had no choice.”

A shiver crawled along Luna’s spine. She closed the door, the slide of the bolt a whispered kiss of finality.

“Start talking,” she demanded, swallowing the tremor she could no longer hide.

He hesitated, the weight of the secret pressing against his throat.

“Luna…” His voice cracked on her name, thick with something like regret. “I haven’t been working for you. Not really.”

Her heart stuttered, a wild falcon battering against a cage of disbelief.

“Then who?” The word broke like glass on the floor.

“Malik.”

The name slithered into the room like a shadow, chilling the damp air.

Luna’s fists clenched into fists on the worn wooden table. “You’re lying.”

His hands rose in surrender. “I swear I’m not.”

A thunderclap punctuated the moment, rain pelting the windows with staccato fury. Outside, the city wept electric tears under the watchful eyes of neon gods.

“I’m Malik’s double agent.”

Each word landed with the weight of a bullet. Luna staggered back, eyes wide, searching his face for flickers of deceit or desperation.

“Why?” Her voice cracked. “Why betray me—your friend?”

Cal’s gaze dropped, fingers twitching as if untangling invisible chains. “Because I’m trying to protect you.”

The words fractured the silence, fragile and jagged as broken promises.

Luna’s breath caught—betrayal tasted like ash and acid. Yet beneath it, a thread of hope knotted tight—a sliver of salvation wrapped in shadows.

“Tell me everything,” she whispered, voice raw.

Cal swallowed hard, stepping closer, the damp chill of his presence both comfort and curse.

Outside, the city held its breath—waiting.

Waiting for the truth to ignite the darkness.

The night had just begun.
