Dark History

---

The photograph lay face down on the slick pavement, the raindrops pooling in the cracked edges like ink stains bleeding secrets too deep to forgive.

Luna knelt beside it, her fingers trembling just above the soaked image. The thunder swallowed the city’s hum—sirens, distant shouts—until only the rapid thud of her heart remained, echoing in the cavern of her chest.

A face surfaced in the blurred wetness: Malik’s. But behind him—shadows sprawling like twisted roots—was a woman. Her eyes, sharp as broken glass, bore straight into Luna’s soul.

Her breath hitched. The knot inside her stomach coiled tighter, cold as ice mixed with the metallic taste of blood rising in her throat. She bit down hard on her lip, as if that could seal away the terror.

A sudden flash of memory pulsed through her mind: a house with peeling wallpaper, muffled screams swallowed by the night, hands that weren’t hers smashing something fragile…

But the image fractured again, shards scattering like the photograph beneath her.

Luna forced herself to stand, rain seeping through her thin jacket, chilling her skin. The city’s neon haze blurred into a twisting kaleidoscope—reds bleeding into blues, the glow a mocking reminder of what she couldn’t see.

Behind her, the alleyway yawned, silently waiting with its filth and secrets. Somewhere deeper within that darkness lay the twisted family story she was desperate to unearth. But the truth threatened to suffocate.

Her fingers curled into fists, nails digging crescents into wet palms. She needed answers. Needed to remember.

The cold metal door beside her suddenly creaked open, groaning like a wound reopening. Luna flinched, stepping back under the venetian rain.

“Can’t run from blood,” a voice whispered, low and gravelly.

She whirled around.

Malik stood framed in the doorway—his coat slick with rain, eyes gleaming like polished obsidian. The stormlight caught the scars etched across his jaw, a map of battles fought in shadows.

“You think you’re close, Luna. But you don’t know the half of it.”

Her pulse quickened, corners of her mouth twitching to bite out the words she’d rehearsed a thousand times. “Then tell me.”

Malik’s laugh was a blade sliding across glass—sharp, cold, and dangerous.

“Some stories are meant to stay buried. Especially when they’re soaked in blood.”

She stared at him, heart jabbing against her ribs like a trapped bird. “I’m not afraid anymore.”

He stepped forward, rain tracing the lines of his face, but his eyes flickered—something dark and unreadable hiding behind that cold facade.

“Maybe you should be.”

Before she could respond, a sudden gust rattled the door, scattering a handful of papers onto the wet concrete.

Luna’s gaze snagged on one—a yellowed page curling at the edges, ink faded but still legible beneath the rain’s assault.

Without thinking, she snatched it up, gripping it like a lifeline.

Her eyes raced over the scrawled handwriting, breath choking on the words:

“...the night the screams stopped but the silence became louder than any cry. I buried the pieces where no one would find them—hoping the past would stay dead. But some ghosts claw their way out, and the blood remembers.”

A name was written in the corner—one she couldn’t place, scribbled hurriedly like a secret too painful to say aloud.

Her throat tightened. The page crinkled in her grasp, soaked through but resistant—as if it, too, refused to let go.

Memories—a locked door in her mind—teetered on the edge of breaking open. And whatever lay behind it was drenched in trauma she had violently suppressed.

Behind her, Malik’s silhouette loomed.

“You shouldn’t be holding that.”

Luna swallowed the lump in her throat.

Her past wasn’t ready to let her go.

And neither was he.

The rain thickened, a curtain drawn between what was known and the darkness clawing to emerge.

Her hands shook violently, and a single, unanswered question burned hot and wild between them.

What had she buried so deep—and why did it want to surface now?

The words hummed in her mind, echoing through the storm: “The blood remembers.”

And with that, Luna felt the fragile dam of her forgotten history begin to crumble.
