Dorian’s Shadow

The rasp of the door echoed in the cramped room long after it slammed shut behind him.

Elara’s lungs sucked in jerked, ragged breaths, her back slammed against the cold concrete wall. Her fingertips pressed hard against the grainy surface, seeking some footing amid the swirling chaos in her mind—the name Dorian Voss like a pulse, a dark rhythm hammering just beneath her skin.

“Time’s up, Elara.”

His voice — low, clipped — still burned in the stale, recycled air. No trace of mercy, just finality. But why had he spoken those words? Was it a threat? A promise? Or something else she hadn’t yet untangled?

Her heart wouldn't settle. It thudded unevenly, as if echoing a countdown only she could hear. Every second stretched taut, the silence thick and suffocating.

The door locked behind him with a definitive click.

No footsteps receded. No echo of leaving. Just the needle-sharp awareness that she was alone—and dangerously exposed.

An ache bloomed in her temples as the shards of her fractured memories pressed like ice against her skull. The unanswered questions warped into a tangled mass, feeding the creeping dread. Who was this man? And what parts of her history did he hold hostage?

Her eyes, adjusting to the gray wash of fluorescent flicker above, scanned the room. The narrow window cracked open a sliver of gloom, rain-soaked city lights smearing like a smeared stain on glass. Scratchy, humming monitors lined the dusty desk— glowing hints of faceless data. A digital clock blinked 3:17 a.m., indifferent to the storm outside or the storm inside her.

Elara pushed off the wall, muscles stiff but reflexive. She had to move. She had to act.

The cluttered desk held her next lead: a half-burned file folder. Tattered edges, stained with old coffee rings like bruises. It felt oddly... familiar.

As she sifted through the papers, her breath hitched.

There he was again—Dorian Voss.

But the reports conflicted wildly.

One document painted a man of untouchable privilege—a titan of industry commanding vast corporate empires. Elegant suits, the cold gleam of power in his eyes, philanthropic ventures masking untold schemes.

Another source snarled with fury: a shadowy warlord operating beyond laws, silencing enemies with surgical precision; a ghost among the city’s rot where corruption sustained itself like a cancer.

And then an intercepted message, scrambled and half-erased, implied he was connected to the very black-market tech dealing in mind manipulation—the same technology Elara feared had stolen her past.

Her fingers trembled as she wove these threads. None fit neatly. None told the full story.

The room grew colder, the lights flickering once more.

A soft ding from the corner alerted her—the small communicator she'd forgotten was under the papers.

Her pulse quickened.

With one shaky hand, she reached out, snatching the device.

A new message flashed, encrypted but unmistakable:

Stop digging, Elara. Some shadows shouldn’t be chased. Or you’ll disappear faster than your memories.

No sender ID. No customary signature.

Just that chilling warning.

She swallowed hard. The city outside howled in the wind, neon bleeding through the rain like veins of light.

Dorian’s shadow was long.

And it was closing in.

Elara’s fingers gripped the communicator as a new resolve sparked.

She wouldn’t stop—

Not now.

But she also understood one terrifying truth:

Whispered threats from darkness could sometimes be preludes to obliteration.
