Chapter 10

The Forgotten Vault

The blade stopped its arc a hair’s breadth from her cheek, its cold edge humming in the tense air. Elara jerked backward, a sharp gasp clawing up her throat, but no wound blossomed. The figure held still, shadowed beneath the cracked neon flicker leaking through the cracked ceiling.

Her heart battered against ribs like a caged thing, raw adrenaline sharpening every nerve. Fingers trembling, she scanned the silhouette—their breath shallow, a tremor in the tight line of their jaw. No friendly rescue, no ally. Just a ghost cloaked in menace.

A voice, low and ragged, slithered through the dank vault. “Running won’t save you.”

Elara’s eyes slid to the doorway behind him; no other exits, no obvious escape. Her back ached against the cold steel of the safe, the faint scent of rust and old paper thick in the air. She forced her hands steady, racing through the options—fight, flee, reason.

“Who sent you?” Her voice cracked, tremulous but rising with brittle defiance. “What do you want from me?”

The man chuckled. A harsh, cracked sound like gravel grinding underfoot. “You, Elara. Or what you used to be. Nothing more.”

That name slipped from his lips like poison. Could it be true? Had the shadows finally tumbled her mask aside?

Her gaze locked on the blade. Not a moment to lose.

With a sudden surge, she lunged right, grabbing the wrist holding the knife. Metallic clangs echoed as they crashed against the vault’s inner walls. The man was unexpectedly strong; his grip tightened, moving like a viper striking.

But Elara’s desperation ignited a fierce edge beneath trembling skin. She twisted hard, wrenching the knife free with a raw grunt. It sang through the air, embedding itself into the steel door mere inches from his face.

The attacker’s startled growl dissolved into the swirling shadows as she scrambled away, heart pounding its furious tattoo.

“Stay out of my way!” she spat, shifting toward the flickering light that pooled over the vault’s inner sanctum.

He hissed, retreating a step. “You don’t understand what you’re meddling in.”

Elara’s breath came sharp and ragged. Her fingers brushed over the cold handles of filing cabinets, crates piled in chaotic towers like forgotten bones. Each beckoned.

Her gaze snagged on a battered steel chest, half-buried beneath loose wires and fractured chips. Something thumped deep inside.

“Why am I here?” she demanded, voice cracking beneath the weight of her own desperation.

The shadow’s eyes glinted. “Because you hold a fragment. A memory they erased for a reason.”

He turned, melting between pillars of steel and shadows, leaving her alone in the vault’s oppressive hush.

Elara exhaled, lungs stinging with cold fear and fierce resolve. The moment was fracturing, razor thin. This was no accident—not chance, but design.

She crossed to the chest, caught the cold click of its latch releasing under fingertips slick with sweat. Inside lay a mess of old photographs, yellowed papers, and sealed envelopes etched in cryptic symbols.

Her breath stalled as she pulled out the top item—an envelope marked with the same jagged tattoo inked across her wrist, the same one seared through her past.

Hands trembling, Elara peeled it open.

Inside, a series of files—and an unmistakable photo.

The grainy image emerged under the weak neon. A younger woman, eyes fierce and searching—her face unmistakably Elara’s. But this time, Elara wasn’t alone.

Three faces smiled beside her—strangers, eyes sharp and guarded. Men and women dressed in suits, coats with badges pinned, staring back with a mixture of camaraderie and unease.

Her mind splintered as shadows of impossible truths rippled beneath the surface.

Who were they? Allies? Enemies? Puppeteers in the grim theater that had stolen her memories?

The silence thickened like a shroud around the vault’s corners, the distant city’s hum swallowed beneath the weight of revelation.

A sudden noise—footsteps, faint but closing fast—made Elara freeze, heart stalling in her chest.

The past wasn’t just waiting to be unveiled.

It was hunting her.

And somewhere beyond those steel walls, the forgotten pieces of her life still whispered secrets that could shatter everything.

The files trembled in her hands.

The photo stared back.

And just beyond the cracked vault door, footsteps echoed like a drumbeat of fate.

Who was coming for her now?
