Chapter 5
The line crackled like static beneath her trembling thumb. Amara’s heartbeat thundered against her ribs, an erratic drum blending panic with desperate hope. Silence stretched—a hollow cavern carved from the city’s neon haze.
Then a voice slithered through the receiver, jagged and fragmented, as if struggling through layers of interference and fear.
“...listen carefully, Amara. They’re... watching.”
The words arrived in shards, sharp edges biting at the edges of her sanity. A low, erratic hum buzzed beneath the voice, like wires fraying in the dark.
“Trust—no one. Not… Lysander. They’ve buried the truth too deep this time...”
Her fingers clenched the phone so tightly her nails bit into her palm. The tattoo beneath her sleeve throbbed—a slow pulse against her skin like it was alive, syncing with the urgency the voice carried.
“Remember the archives. The records from Grid 9. The—” The voice fractured, words torn apart mid-sentence before rushing in again like a broken waterfall.
“Voices in the walls. They hear us... but they don’t know you yet.”
Amara swallowed hard, trying to piece the scattered fragments into sense—why did this invisible informant sound so terrified? Was it a trap? A lifeline?
She swallowed the chill crawling up her spine when the caller whispered, the husky tone dipping into something closer, almost close enough to touch.
“You’re closer than you think.”
Then the line went dead.
The sudden silence felt like ice.
Her breath caught, a shallow hitch in the darkness. The neon-lit room blurred, edges folding in, her mind spinning with the weight of the message and the sharp sting of its abrupt end.
Pressure mounted behind her eyes, the raw need to act clawing its way out of the confusion. Someone had broken through the shadows—an ally, an enemy, or something in between. The only certainty was that the truth was unsettled, floating just out of reach.
A breathless moment later, the phone vibrated again, this time with an unknown number blinking insistently on the screen. The city hummed outside, a living beast hiding secrets beneath its glossy surface, and Amara felt the cold grit of danger sliding closer.
She stood, the chair scraping faintly against cracked concrete. Fingers uncoiling like a taut wire, her gaze settled on the faint glow beneath her sleeve—the tattoo pulsing like a beacon in the dim light.
“Closer than I think…” she repeated, voice barely above a breath.
Fire kindled in her veins. The chase had begun. But who was watching—the ghost in the line? Or Lysander Crowe’s relentless shadow?
The phone buzzed again. The screen darkened.
Then silence swallowed the room once more.
Outside, somewhere in the city, a door clicked shut.
And Amara knew: nothing—and no one—was as they seemed.
