Chapter 2

The Marked Forearm

The walls seemed to breathe.

Air thick and stale curled into her lungs like smoke, each breath rasping through her cracked throat. The leather of her jacket pressed cold against her damp skin. Shadows bled along the peeling concrete, pooling in the corners like spilled ink. Her heartbeat hammered—a frantic echo bouncing off the empty crates and rusted beams.

She pressed her back flat against the grimy brick, fingers trembling. The skin on her forearm caught her eye, ripped and raw beneath the thin sleeve. Something—something stubborn and alive—pulled her gaze downward.

The tattoo.

A blur of black ink: jagged lines, looping symbols alien and precise, etched beneath the surface. It pressed like a question mark tattooed on her memory. She rolled the sleeve back, raw fingertips grazing the marked skin.

Every line etched below her wrist told something secret — not a name, not a symbol of allegiance, but a map. A trail of routes and sigils unreadable, yet under her touch, they whispered.

Cold sweat trickled from her temples; the shadows seemed to lean closer.

Her eyes narrowed, scanning the intricate patterns: angular glyphs circled by faint geometric shapes, sharp arrows pointing irregular directions. The ink coursed like circuitry beneath her skin—an uncharted language. She traced one symbol—a triangle intersected by a serpent—its edges faded but deliberate.

A faint hum shivered in the silence.

Heart squeezing tighter, she fought to push down the flood of unease. What was this? Her mind fumbled for understanding; the tattoo wasn’t just decoration—it was a message, a key she barely remembered locking away.

“Maps don’t make sense without legends.”

That voice hissed, low and close. She spun, slow, heart stuttering. Nothing moved. No shape, no shadow shifted. Just the warehouse breathing its stale surrender.

Her fingers curled again, restless and raw, over the tattoo.

Then—a flash.

Light bloomed behind her closed eyelids, sharp and electric. A rush of symbols, letters, flickered like broken code: “V–X–13… decode… vulnerability... Crowe.”

The message was gone before she could grasp it.

Breath hitched like a caught animal. That name—Crowe—slithered into her thoughts and froze them.

Her fingers clenched into the mark, skin burning where the ink met flesh.

Why did her blood scream that name? What part of her remembered?

Cold fingers gripped her wrist sharply.

She yanked her arm back, wild eyes flaring.

And in the span between heartbeats, the warehouse doors groaned—slow, deliberate.

Footsteps—echoing, resonant—stepped onto cracked concrete, growing louder.

The hunt had started.

Her skin prickled beneath the tattoo’s cryptic weave, a fractured promise tangled in the veins beneath.

Somewhere in the spreading darkness, the truth was waiting.

And now, it was coming for her.

A long shadow stretched toward her, breaking the fragile web of silence.

She swallowed hard, the secret burned beneath her skin—alive, restless, unforgiving.

The marked forearm pulsed beneath her trembling fingers.

And with it, her past—her sin—flickered back to life.
