Chapter 9
The echo of the knock lingered, vibrating through the sterile concrete walls of the emergency stairwell like a bullet ricocheting off cold steel. Celeste’s throat tightened, her breath shallow, each inhale jagged as if she’d lunged underwater and couldn’t find her surface.
Dominic stood motionless, white-knuckled against the rusted door, his silver eyes locked on the distant hallway beyond. The faint hum of distant footsteps crept closer—too deliberate to be accidental.
"Who the hell is that?" Celeste’s voice was a razor-tip against the darkness.
Dominic’s jaw clenched, a slow grimace pulling at the edge of his mouth. "We don’t have time." His fingers traced a rapid path along the emergency latch’s edge.
"No, wait—" Celeste’s protest broke through the rising tide in her chest. A bitter swell of adrenaline unfurled, ice mingling with fire in the pit of her stomach. "If it’s someone from your side—"
"My side?" He snapped, eyes narrowing. The words hung between them like venom. "You think I’m working for him now?"
Celeste’s hands curled into fists, nails biting into palms slick with sweat. "I mean, Dominic—we both know this game isn't just black and white anymore."
Another sharp knock. This time slower, methodical, a coded pulse meant to provoke an answer.
Dominic shifted, then in a swift motion, yanked the door open a hair’s breadth.
A shadow slipped through.
Celeste’s pulse hit a frantic tempo, every muscle taut, every nerve screaming. She fixed her gaze on the intruder.
"Jason?" The name fell out like a question mark drawn with hesitation.
Jason Leighton, her CFO—and out of everyone she should trust implicitly, the man whose loyalty had unshakably anchored her through months of bruising power plays—stood framed against the harsh fluorescent light of the dim hallway. His face was pale, drawn. The sharp angles of his cheekbones caught the cold glow like a blade.
Once inside, Jason’s eyes flicked between Celeste and Dominic, but a flicker of something unreadable sparkled briefly before his smile stitched itself back onto neutral.
"I didn’t think I’d find you here," he whispered, voice low enough to slice through the tension.
Celeste’s heart thudded so loudly she could barely catch his words. "What—what’s going on, Jason? You shouldn’t be sneaking around in stairwells. Especially not now."
He swallowed, avoiding Dominic’s stare, then met Celeste’s eyes with a forced steadiness. "I need to talk to you. Alone."
Dominic’s lips curled, sharp as a blade’s edge. "She doesn’t get to choose alone right now."
Jason’s glance glanced at him, almost like a warning. Then he turned back to Celeste. "Please—five minutes. There’s something you don’t know."
Celeste hesitated. The seconds folded over themselves like waves barreling toward a jagged cliff. Her mind screamed caution, but beneath it, a tendril of dread curled inside her ribs—a feeling she buried as fear.
Five minutes. That was all she needed.
Dominic’s eyes never left them, dark and dangerous. Then, with a grudging nod, he stepped back.
Celeste followed Jason down the shadowed corridor leading away from the stairwell. Their footsteps swallowed by the thick silence.
"Talk," she urged.
Jason’s breath shuddered, and for a frail moment, his mask cracked. "It’s Dominic."
Her stomach twisted. "What about him?"
"He’s playing us all. Including me."
Celeste’s head whipped up. "You’re working for him?"
"No," Jason said, voice dropping. "Not exactly."
He glanced over his shoulder, as if expecting someone to intercept their words. "I’ve been feeding him info. Not all of it, but enough to keep him steps ahead. Because if he knows about the debts, the vulnerabilities we thought hidden—"
He let the threat dangle like a blade above her.
Celeste’s breath hitched. Her mind scrambled fiercely against the quiet betrayal igniting cold fires in her chest.
"Why, Jason? Why do this?"
He looked away, jaw tight. "Because if Dominic wins—then he owns everything. But if he loses, I’m out. This city, this game—it moves fast. I’m just trying to survive."
Celeste’s fingers trembled. The room spun with the weight of his confession, the intimate fracture of trust so sudden it bled in silence.
"We trusted you," her voice cracked, raw.
"And I never wanted you to find out this way," he whispered, eyes breaking for a fleeting second.
She stepped back, disbelief knotting her throat. "You used me."
Jason’s hand twitched, almost reaching out. "Celeste—"
"No," she cut him off, voice steel and fire. "You don’t get to pretend you’re a friend after this."
But even as the words tumbled free, a shadow crossed her thoughts.
"This meeting," she leaned in, voice dropping. "Who were you meeting? You didn’t come here by accident."
Jason’s gaze dropped. Then, a deadly pause thickened the air.
"I met Dominic’s people three nights ago. They handed me a file—something huge. Evidence that could bury the Harper name for good."
Cold seeped under Celeste’s skin.
"You handed it to him?"
"No," Jason said quickly, "I kept it. Planned to use it against him."
"But?" She cut in, heart hammering.
He swallowed hard. "I think he suspects I’m playing both sides. And now... now he wants to protect his position. He demands proof of loyalty."
Celeste’s mind spun—every direction lead deeper into a labyrinth of betrayal and strategy that made her head swim.
"You need to decide," Jason said, voice suddenly intense. "Stay out of his reach or get dragged under with me."
The hallway seemed to close around them, the overhead lights flickering as a cold gust swept through, carrying the faint metallic scent of iron.
On the other side of the stairwell door, the city roared—impatient and ruthless.
"Is this why you’ve been distant? Avoiding calls?" Celeste felt the slow, bitter burn of all the small signs she’d ignored.
Jason nodded.
She swallowed the bitter truth, every betrayal carving shards into her ribs.
"We’re running out of time, Celeste," he warned, voice dropping to a whisper. "If Dominic finds out I told you, or worse—he’s making moves as we speak."
Suddenly, their conversation was shattered by the sharp chime of notifications from her phone resting heavy in her palm.
Dominic’s name flashed across the screen—followed by a location she didn’t recognize.
Jason’s face tightened. "That’s him. He’s meeting someone right now. And it’s someone who could change everything."
Celeste’s breath caught—sharp and unforgiving.
Her fingers hovered over the call button.
"Whatever happens next," Jason said quietly, "remember—trust no one."
The hallway grew colder.
And just as a shadow detached itself from the darkened corner—a figure slipped silently into the glow of the flickering light.
Celeste froze.
The ally’s secret meeting wasn’t just an accident.
It was the opening move of a deeper, deadlier game.
The chapter ended with the echoing sound of footsteps—approaching fast.
And the screen went black.
