Close Call

The knock shattered the thick silence like a gunshot. Celeste’s breath hitched, the remnants of her racing pulse thudding against her ribs with maddening unevenness. Dominic’s gaze, sharp as icicles, locked on the door—but didn’t move. For a fraction of a breath, the world froze, the tension a coiled wire ready to snap.

Then, as if summoned by the noise, the door creaked open with a hesitant groan.

A waiter stepped inside, eyes flicking nervously between the two locked figures. In his hands, a silver tray glinted under the gallery of crystal chandeliers—an ordinary tray laden with champagne flutes. But something in his slipshod footing, the nervous twitch of his jaw betrayed more than misplaced nerves.

Celeste’s stomach churned. She barely heard Dominic’s low, clipped command.

“Stay out.”

The waiter hesitated then nodded, retreating as quickly as he had appeared. The door eased shut behind him, leaving an echo of whispered danger hanging in the air like a veiled threat.

Celeste swallowed hard, trying to steady the tremor threading through her. Each breath came shallow, taste metallic and sharp on her tongue. Her eyes darted to Dominic, searching—what? For answers? Warnings? Relief?

He offered neither. Instead, his face was a mask carved from slate—implacable and sickly calm. Yet, beneath the polished veneer, a storm churned. Something dark flickered behind those storm-gray eyes. Something urgent.

“I’ll call security,” Celeste whispered, voice brittle. But he silenced her with a sharp nod.

“No. Now would be the perfect moment to tip off someone who’s already part of the problem.”

She studied his face, heart cursing in her chest. Did he trust her this little? Or was that just the weight of the war they waged surging between them?

Before she could press, a sharp clang sliced through the air—a shout from the ballroom beyond the gilded doors where the gala throbbed with artificial laughter and polished smiles. Something had gone wrong.

“Stay here.” Dominic’s words fell like a warning grenade. Then, he stormed from the room, each step purposeful and soundless on the marble floor.

Celeste’s eyes burned after him, feeling suddenly stranded in a web she neither wove nor could untangle…

The gala spun on outside—an ocean of silk gowns and tailored tuxedos under an opulent sky of glittering lights. A world of whispered alliances and second glances. And somewhere amongst them, a saboteur prowled.

Celeste’s fingers clenched the crystal stem of her glass until her knuckles whitened. Her eyes tracked every shadow, every subtle shift in the room’s rhythm, every hesitant glance as people tried to unmask the unseen threat.

Her breath caught as a sudden metallic scent pricked her nostrils—the faint but unmistakable undercurrent of gasoline.

Panic struck with ice-laced claws, crawling down her spine as the first sharp crack echoed like a gunshot, followed by the flicker of flame sparked beneath the grand staircase.

Sirens blared like banshees, people screamed and scrambled, chaos fracturing the gilded facade of the evening.

Celeste’s heart hammered dread into her throat. The inferno spread quickly—no simple accident—and as curtains caught fire, heat rolled over her like a malevolent wave.

A steadying hand clasped her shoulder.

“Celeste.” The voice was low, urgent, but not Dominic’s.

She spun. A security guard, eyes wide with alarm, whispered, “Follow me. Now.”

Her lungs burned as they pushed through the panic-stricken crowd, smoke coiling tendrils at their heels. Every breath was a gamble against burning ash and choking fear.

Suddenly, her foot caught on something invisible. Time slowed as she pitched forward, arms flailing, chest smashing against the cold marble.

Air ripped from her lungs.

Half-blinded by smoke, heart hammering against her ribs, she struggled to drag herself up… Then a shadow fell over her.

Strong arms caught her with the ferocity of a predator, spinning her away from the choking smoke and harsh heat.

It was Dominic.

For a frozen moment, her eyes locked with his—raw, burning with something impossible to read.

“You’re reckless.”

His voice was rough, edged with an emotion neither blame nor anger.

“Not your concern,” she rasped, chest heaving.

He hauled her upright, muscles taut, his grip firm and unnervingly protective.

Together they moved, cutting through the chaos towards the nearest exit, flames roaring behind like dragon’s breath.

The corridor closed in, thick smoke now choking the air and turning the world to dusk.

Celeste’s vision blurred. Heat licked at her skin, sweat trickling down her temples.

Suddenly, a low rumble shook the building like a warning growl.

The chandeliers above them trembled, shards of crystal rattling loose.

Dominic cursed under his breath, pulling her faster.

“Almost there.”

Her fingers dug into his forearm. “Why—why are you here?”

He froze for a heartbeat, jaw clenched.

“Would you rather I wasn’t?”

Before she could answer, the hallway plunged into darkness—electrical failure knocking out the emergency lights.

Blackness swallowed them whole.

Their breathing pounded in the void.

Dominic’s hand found hers, cold and urgent.

“We’re not safe yet.”

Then, footsteps—rapid, echoing.

From the abyss, a figure lunged.

Dominic reacted instantly, pulling Celeste behind him as a harsh voice barked, “Get out of the way!”

A harsh scuffle, a sharp breath held tight.

And then—

The world erupted in a blinding flash of light.

Celeste squeezed her eyes shut, heart threatening to tear free from her chest.

When she dared to look again, Dominic stood firm, shielding her.

The stranger was gone.

Her chest heaved, lungs burning with smoke and adrenaline.

“Why now?” she demanded, voice raw.

Dominic’s eyes searched hers, haunted and conflicted.

“Because if I don’t, you won’t make it.”

A bitter twist settled between them. Rescue had a price, and the flames between them were only beginning to burn.

The crackling fire grew closer.

A sudden, sharp knock rattled the emergency exit door like a pistol shot.

Celeste’s breath caught.

And behind Dominic’s steel gaze, a flicker of something else—fear? Resolve?—blazed bright.

The war hadn’t just begun.

It had already turned deadly.
