Chapter 4

Forced Alliance

The lock’s click echoed like a death knell in the stale air. Celeste’s grip tightened around the thin glass pane of the conference room window. Her breath hitched—sharp, uneven. Light from the city’s skyline fractured across the table, shadows twisting on the polished surface.

No footsteps. No voice. Just the suffocating silence that began to crawl under her skin, cold and relentless.

Outside the door, the silence was a predator, waiting.

She forced her eyes away from the lock. Her heart hammering, fists clenched beneath the table, she swore she could hear the faintest scrape—paper? A breath?—barely perceptible, as if the building itself held its breath.

A flare of movement caught her peripheral vision.

A long, slow shadow draped across the hallway beyond the frosted glass. Brief, deliberate.

Steps—soft, but impossibly close.

Celeste’s muscles coiled. Not fear. Calculation. The instinct that had saved her more than once in boardrooms and back alleys alike. She deposited the glass on the table with a muted clink.

“Dominic,” she whispered, voice low enough to dissolve into the quiet.

He was leaning against the far wall, the excruciating chill in his gaze cutting sharper than broken glass. His hand rested lightly on the doorframe, a tension so profound beneath his elegant composure that it made his already rigid jawline seem carved from obsidian.

“You heard it, too.”

He nodded once, slow, deliberate—no hesitation. “This isn’t just a threat anymore. It’s an ambush.”

A tight swallow. Celeste’s fingers curled into trembling fists. An ambush. The word tasted like grit, sharp and bitter.

The city outside seethed with its usual night symphony: distant sirens, the hum of neon, the faint clatter of heels against rain-slicked pavement. But here, inside this fortress of glass and steel, it was a world suspended—waiting for something to break.

Dominic stepped away from the frame, eyes briefly flicking to hers.

“We don’t have time to play the usual games.”

Her pulse thrummed harder. The unspoken agreement hovered like poison between them—two enemies shackled by necessity.

“No one else can know we’re together. If this leaks…” her voice broke off, swallowed by the weight of unspoken consequences.

Dominic’s lips twitched—half a sneer, half a smirk. The familiar fire ignited in his eyes, the old rivalry flashing beneath the surface like lightning in a storm.

“But we can’t take this alone.”

She caught the flicker—the hesitation, the grudging respect hidden beneath his scowl.

“Fine,” she said, voice hard. “But don’t think this means I trust you.”

He bowed his head in mock solemnity. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

The distant thud of a heavy footstep reverberated again.

“The security feeds are down,” Dominic said, voice low, eyes scanning the shadows beyond the glass. “We’re blind. Whoever this is, they’ve come prepared.”

Celeste’s mind raced. The debt. The doomed deals. The ruin clawing at her family like a feral beast. Survival had been her only law. Now survival demanded a twisted alliance.

A flicker on the panel near the door—an unauthorized breach alert flashed red.

Dominic’s hand moved to the concealed holster beneath his jacket. Celeste’s fingers grazed the edge of the pen knife in her purse.

They were not equals in this moment, but they were the only option.

“First move,” she said, voice tight, “we lock down all exits. Second—we find out who wants us dead before we kill each other.”

His dark gaze settled on her like a promise—dangerous, reluctant, inevitable.

“Agreed.”

The door shuddered as a muffled sound scraped against the other side—paper, metal, something deliberate.

Celeste pressed herself flat against the glass, breath shallow. The man—or woman—was hunting them, and all bets were off.

Dominic’s phone vibrated silently, screen illuminating with a single, chilling message:

“The enemy is closer than you think.”

His sharp intake of breath was the only warning before the lights blinked out—plunging them into a suffocating blackness filled only by the pounding of their own hearts.

And the door began to crack open.
